A small bottle turns up at the end of Casino Royale, and it tells Daniel Craig’s Bond more about Vesper Lynd than most of what she said. The Santa Maria Novella Melograno eau de cologne is a pomegranate-led citrus and rose fragrance from a Florentine house that dates its founding to 1221. It is a good cologne in its own right, quite apart from the film.
In the scene, Bond goes through the contents of Vesper’s purse, and the bottle is among them. Eva Green’s Vesper is the character associated with it.
Owning it now
Melograno opens with bergamot, bitter orange and spice, moves to pomegranate, rose and ylang-ylang, and rests on oakmoss, patchouli, labdanum and musk. Reviewers describe it as more earthy and mossy than fruity, and that matches our reading of the notes: it is a cologne with some structure, not a sweet one. It is sold for men and women alike.
We would choose the 100ml bottle for a first purchase, and wear it by day, in spring or autumn, when a citrus top still feels fresh and the mossy base has something to settle against. Because it is an eau de cologne, apply it generously and expect to reapply.
