Most villains’ emblems are loud. The Spectre octopus ring is not. It is a silver ring with a black enamelled octopus, and it tells a room nothing unless the room already knows. In Spectre (2015) it marks the members of the organisation. The 007 Store’s replica lets you own the object without the allegiance, which is the better arrangement.
In the film
Members of the organisation wear the ring in Spectre, among them Marco Sciarra, played by Alessandro Cremona. Daniel Craig’s Bond takes the ring from Sciarra, and from that point it matters to the story. The 007 Store describes its version as an official replica of the ring seen in the film.
The details of the Spectre octopus ring
Sterling silver. Sterling is 92.5 per cent silver, and it takes on a soft grey patina as it ages. It is a metal that improves with wear rather than needing to be protected from it.
A black enamelled octopus. The emblem is filled with black enamel against bright silver. Across a table it reads as a dark mark; up close it is a piece of small-scale drawing. The contrast does the work, so nothing else on the ring needs to.
One size. The 007 Store lists it in a single size, 9.25. That is worth checking against a ring you already wear before you order, because enamel generally makes resizing a job for a jeweller rather than something to attempt casually.
A gift box. It arrives in a black gift box, so it is as easy to give as to keep.
A replica, plainly. This is an official replica made for sale, not a ring worn on set. We say so because it matters to the sort of man who collects these things properly.
Wearing it now
This is a ring for a man who likes a private joke he never has to explain. We would wear it on the little finger of the left hand, in the manner of a signet, and leave it at that. Worn alone it looks like a piece of jewellery with an unusual crest. Worn with a drawer’s worth of 007 merchandise it looks like a costume.
It sits most easily with quiet clothes: a navy knit, a white shirt with the cuff turned back, a grey flannel suit. Keep the rest of the hand plain. A simple steel or silver watch is enough, and the ring will take care of any conversation.
Care. Enamel is hard but brittle, so take the ring off for the gym, for gardening and for anything involving a hammer. A soft cloth is all the silver needs. If it darkens, a silver cloth will bring the metal back without touching the black.
Who it is for. It makes sense as a gift for someone who knows Spectre well, or as a first small piece of Bond for yourself. More jewellery in the same spirit is in our jewellery edit.
