The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Church’s Cartmel Black Calf Derby Shoes (Die Another Day)

Black calf derby shoes in Church’s Cartmel model, worn by Pierce Brosnan’s Bond in London and with the tuxedo at the Ice Palace party in Die Another Day. Church’s still makes a Cartmel, but the current version differs from the 2002 pair.

The shoe that carries Bond from a London office to a black-tie party in Die Another Day is a plain black derby, and that is exactly why it works. The Church’s Cartmel is a lace-up that goes with a business suit by day and a dinner suit by night, and a man who owns one pair of black shoes could do worse.

In the film

Pierce Brosnan’s Bond wears the Cartmel in the London scenes, and again with the tuxedo during the Ice Palace party. Our main source adds a caution worth repeating: the Cartmel on sale today differs from the model Bond wore in 2002. This page treats the current shoe as a descendant, not a replica.

The details

Black calf. The upper is smooth calfskin with a calf lining. Fine, close-grained leather takes a polish, which is what makes a plain derby look dressed.

A derby, not an oxford. The laces sit on flaps over the vamp rather than under it. That gives a slightly broader, more forgiving fit, and a more relaxed look than a closed-lace oxford. It is the right choice for a man who wears shoes all day.

Almond toe, padded insole. Retailer listings describe an almond-shaped toe and an extra-padded insole. The branded footbed is Church’s own touch.

Rubber sole. The current Cartmel R 2.0 has a flat rubber sole. It is quieter than leather and holds up better in wet weather, though it dresses down a little.

Wearing it now

Treat the Cartmel as the shoe that makes the rest of your wardrobe easier. Wear it with grey and navy suits, charcoal flannel trousers and a dark overcoat. With a dinner suit, a derby is a looser choice than a patent oxford, but a polished black calf pair passes in most rooms. Keep a cedar tree in them, polish them every few wears and rotate pairs.

Sizing. Church’s cuts its own lasts, so try before you buy if you can, or check the maker’s size chart.

The 2002 pair. If you want the older shoe, a second-hand search is the way to find one, and the maker’s current Cartmel R 2.0 is the successor.

In the same spirit

A plainer, black calf derby from a different English maker is the Crockett & Jones Highbury, a three-eyelet derby that Daniel Craig’s Bond wears with his London suits. It is an alternative, not a shoe from this film.

Is the Church’s Cartmel a derby or an oxford?

A derby. The laces sit on open flaps rather than under the vamp, which makes the fit a little roomier.

How much does the Church’s Cartmel cost?

At the time of writing, October 2026, Church’s lists the Cartmel R 2.0 Calfskin Derby at US$1,290, as a pre-order.

Church’s has the details on its Cartmel page. Another look at the era is in our clothing and Die Another Day.
