The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Crockett & Jones Alex Black Calf (Spectre)

A plain whole-cut oxford in black calf with a single leather sole, made in Northampton. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears the Alex with his Tom Ford dinner suit in Spectre, and it is the quietest, most correct black evening shoe we know.

Black tie leaves little room for invention, which is why the shoe matters. In Spectre, Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a plain, whole-cut black oxford with his dinner suit, and nothing about it asks to be noticed. It is the Crockett & Jones Alex, and in our view it is the right answer to the question of what a man should wear on his feet after dark.

In the film

Bond wears the Alex with his Tom Ford dinner suit for the train dinner in Morocco in Spectre (2015). It is a return engagement: the same shoe is worn with the tuxedo in Skyfall (2012). Crockett & Jones have also worked with the Bond filmmakers on No Time To Die.

The details of the Crockett & Jones Alex

A whole-cut upper. The Alex has a plain front, with no toe cap, no brogueing and no seam across the vamp. The line from lace to toe runs uninterrupted, which is exactly what you want beneath black trousers.

Black calf. Crockett & Jones cut it from European calf skins from established tanneries. The maker says the strong tannage helps the leather age well, which is what you want from a shoe meant to last.

A single leather sole. It keeps the shoe slim and close to the ground, as an evening shoe should be. The trade-off is grip and weather, which we come to below.

Goodyear-welted, made in Northampton. The welted construction means the shoe can be resoled rather than replaced. Crockett & Jones say each pair takes up to eight weeks and more than 200 operations to make, in their own factory.

Wearing it now

The obvious use is black tie, and there it needs no help. But the Alex is more useful than a once-a-year shoe. With a charcoal or navy suit and a white shirt it makes a formal, sober option for a wedding, a funeral or a dinner where you would rather be slightly overdressed than otherwise. We would not wear it with chinos; the shoe is too clean for them.

Which version? The Alex also comes in dark brown burnished calf and in black patent. We would choose the black calf. It is the pair from the film, and it works for far more occasions than patent, which is for black tie and little else.

Rain. A leather sole is at its best on dry pavements and carpeted rooms. If you expect to wear them often in a wet climate, ask a good cobbler about a thin rubber half-sole.

Care. Use cedar shoe trees, give the shoes a day’s rest between wears, and polish them before they look as if they need it. Looked after, and resoled when needed, one pair will last for years.

Questions

Does Bond wear the Crockett & Jones Alex in Spectre?

Yes. Bond wears the black calf Alex with his Tom Ford dinner suit on the train in Morocco. He also wears the same model with the tuxedo in Skyfall.

What does whole-cut mean?

A whole-cut shoe has its upper cut from a single piece of leather, so there is no seam across the front. The result is a cleaner, more minimal shoe than a cap-toe oxford.

Can you wear the Alex with a suit rather than black tie?

Yes. It suits a dark business or formal suit just as well. It looks best with navy, charcoal or black, and is less at home with casual trousers.

How much does the Crockett & Jones Alex cost?

The black calf Alex has an RRP of US$930 at the time of writing, October 2026, on the maker’s US site. Prices differ by market, so check the maker’s page for your region.
