The breather is one of the few Bond gadgets to return in a revised form. Sean Connery’s Bond uses the first in Thunderball to approach Largo’s lair through a shark pool, and Pierce Brosnan’s Bond is issued an updated version in Die Another Day (2002) to enter Gustav Graves’ lair in Iceland unseen. The Factory Entertainment Breather Evolution Set puts both replicas side by side.
Owning it now
This is a collector’s piece, not a prop to use. The two replicas are 1:1 scale and officially licensed, and are handcrafted from aluminium, brass, die-cast metal and rubber, according to one retailer. Each set is numbered, in an edition limited to 500, and comes with a display stand, an acrylic cover, a numbered plaque, a certificate of authenticity and a prop story booklet. The maker says it studied surviving props in the EON Productions archives and reference material when making them. The two are not the same prop, as Midtown Comics notes, but they share a heritage, and the set is built to show that.
It belongs in a study or on a shelf of film props, under its cover, away from direct sun. Because it is a numbered run, stock is limited, so if the retailer has sold out, search second-hand listings.
