The last scene of Casino Royale takes place at the edge of Lake Como, in front of a turreted villa that looks halfway between a castle and a stage set. Villa La Gaeta, in San Siro on the lake’s western shore, is a private estate, but some of its apartments can be rented, which makes it one of the few Bond locations where you can stay the night.
In the film’s closing moments, Daniel Craig’s Bond tracks Mr White to the villa. It is here that Bond shoots him and gives his name. The villa itself is a private residence, and the apartments within the estate are the part open to visitors.
Staying there now
Villa La Gaeta was built in 1921 to designs by the brothers Gino and Adolfo Coppedè, Florentine architect-designers, and mixes neo-medieval and Art Nouveau ideas. The current listing for a stay is a penthouse within the villa, with a private lake-view terrace, a kitchen, air conditioning, two bathrooms and one bedroom, with a sofa bed for further guests. Beach access is part of the offer.
We would book it for a few quiet days out of season rather than as a stop on a tour. The pleasure is the terrace and the water, with Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello within a short drive for the days you do want to go out. Check dates and rates on the listing, as they change.
