The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Spirit Yachts Spirit 46 Sailing Yacht (No Time To Die)

The Spirit 46 is the sailing yacht Daniel Craig’s Bond sails off his Jamaican home in No Time To Die. A 14.2m modern classic, she pairs 1930s-inspired lines with a contemporary underwater profile, and Spirit Yachts builds each one by hand in Ipswich.

Daniel Craig’s Bond has retired to Jamaica, and his life there comes with little more than one beautiful boat. In No Time To Die it is a Spirit 46: a 14.2m sailing yacht with long overhangs, a low profile and no fuss about it. The Spirit 46 yacht is, in our view, the right answer to what a man who has left the service would actually keep.

In the film

At the start of No Time To Die (2021), Bond sails the yacht in the clear waters around his Jamaican home, then walks from her deck to the house carrying a speargun. Spirit Yachts confirms that a Spirit 46 appears in the film, and its brokerage page for Bamboozle, launched in 2010, credits that boat with appearing in it. More on the film is on our No Time To Die page.

The details of the Spirit 46 yacht

Old lines, new hull. Spirit draws on 1930s classic yacht design: long overhangs, a low profile, smooth lines. Beneath the waterline the profile is contemporary, with an iron blade keel (750kg) and a lead bulb (1,400kg). She looks of another era and is engineered below the waterline for this one.

Built by hand. Spirit builds in Ipswich, to a design by Sean McMillan, and the 46 is made on laminated ring frames. It is a boat made to order rather than taken from a production line.

Quick, but manageable. At 14.2m overall she is long, yet she is easy to handle: her upwind sail area is 64m² on a fractional Bermudan sloop rig, with a 30hp diesel for harbours and calm. Spirit has described her as capable of up to 18 knots. It is a boat to be sailed, not simply moored.

Small crew, short trips. Spirit lays the 46 out as a simple coastal cruiser, as a racing yacht, or as something in between. On Bamboozle, below deck there is a saloon, a galley, a navigation station and a V-berth in the bow. It suits a day on the water or a weekend, not provisioning for a crossing.

Easy to move. Her dimensions and displacement allow her to travel by road or by sea, so she is not tied to one coast. Spirit notes an active racing fleet in the UK and the Mediterranean.

Owning it now

This is not an impulse purchase, and Bond’s boat is not a showpiece. It suits a man who sails himself and wants a boat that rewards him for it, rather than a floating terrace. We would treat her as part of a way of living: early mornings, a short passage to lunch, a swim, home before dark. That is the Jamaica of the film, and Spirit says she can be sailed anywhere in the world.

Which version. Spirit now lists the design as the R46. Decide first whether you want a racing yacht, a quiet coastal boat or both, and brief the yard accordingly; Spirit says the 46 suits each. We would lean towards the simple cruising layout, with sail controls led aft so that two people, or one, can manage her, as on Bamboozle.

New or brokerage. A new Spirit is built to order, so the price comes by enquiry. The yard also runs a brokerage. Its page for Bamboozle carries both “sold” and “for sale” markings, so confirm her availability with Spirit before planning around her.

Yes, though not off the shelf. Spirit builds to order and publishes no price, so you enquire with the yard. It also runs a brokerage for second-hand boats.
