The Heckler & Koch HK416 is a military rifle, and in Skyfall it belongs to the film’s final act at Skyfall Lodge rather than to Bond’s personal kit. The Internet Movie Firearms Database says Silva’s men use HK416s there, with two also seen in Daniel Craig’s Bond’s hands. It is a plain modern rifle designed for armies, and an honest counterpoint to the walnut and engraving elsewhere in the film.

In the film

The catalogue records Bond using an HK416 in Skyfall. The Skyfall page on Bond’s official site lists Heckler & Koch HK416 assault rifles among the film’s items. One catalogue source puts the identification at medium confidence, noting that it “looks like” a HK416, and the IMFDB specifies the D10RS version for the shot of Craig holding one.

The details of the Heckler & Koch HK416

Military design. Heckler & Koch presents the HK416 as a family of rifles for infantry and special forces of the military and police. Wikipedia lists it in service and production from 2004, in 5.56×45mm NATO.

The mechanism. It is an indirect gas-operated rifle with a locked rotating bolt head. The maker says it takes 10, 20 or 30-round magazines and has a full-length Picatinny rail and an HKey slimline handguard.

Size and weight. Wikipedia gives the A5 weight as 3.12 to 3.85kg without a magazine, and a length of 709 to 1,030mm with the stock retracted or extended, depending on configuration.

Variants. HK lists the A5 in barrel lengths of 11in, 12.5in, 14.5in and 16.5in, and HK’s US site also lists a separate HK416A5.

Owning it now

The page Heckler & Koch lists for the HK416 sits in its Military and Law Enforcement range, and we found no consumer sale of the select-fire rifle. Rifles of this kind are controlled almost everywhere; do not assume you can buy one, and check local law before anything else.

There is one lawful alternative. HK’s US site lists an HK416 .22 LR rifle, made in partnership with Umarex of Germany, as a semi-automatic rimfire rifle that copies the look and feel. It lists a 16.1in barrel, a weight of 5.7lb, a US$749 suggested price, and HK calls it the only HK416 .22 LR rifle it authorises. It can be used as a sub-calibre trainer or for hunting or competition. Rimfire rules still vary by place, so check your own. For more from the films, browse the weapons collection.
