The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Heckler & Koch UMP-9 (Casino Royale)

The Heckler & Koch UMP-9 is a polymer-bodied 9mm submachine gun developed as a lighter successor to the MP5. Craig’s Bond has one in the final scene of Casino Royale, and it returns at the start of Quantum of Solace.

The Heckler & Koch UMP-9 is a submachine gun, not a collector’s pistol, and it appears in two moments that mark the start of Craig’s Bond. In Casino Royale it is in his hands in the closing scene, when the character finally becomes the one the audience expects. It is a law-enforcement and military weapon, so this page is about its design and its place in the film rather than a buying guide.

In the film

In the final scene of Casino Royale, Bond stands over Mr White with a UMP-9 and introduces himself. The catalogue notes the model in Quantum of Solace too, where it appears in the teaser artwork and at the start of the film. The catalogue describes the gun as fitted with a silencer and curved magazine, with the stock folded to the side.

The details of the Heckler & Koch UMP-9

A lighter successor. Heckler & Koch developed the UMP as a lighter, cheaper and improved replacement for its MP5, and Wikipedia notes that the 9mm UMP9 is almost 0.2kg lighter than the MP5.

Polymer and simple. HK’s US site describes it as made from advanced polymers, with a simple operating system and a folding buttstock. It fires from a closed bolt, using a blowback action.

Numbers. Chambered in 9×19mm, it has a 7.87in barrel and measures 17.71in with the stock folded and up to 27.16in extended. It weighs 5.06lb without a magazine, and the standard magazine holds 30 rounds.

Modular. HK says the UMP was designed with American law enforcement and military units in mind. Rails at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock give mounting space for accessories.

Owning it now

This is not something an ordinary buyer can walk into a shop and buy. HK’s US page marks the UMP9 with an NFA label, and its dealer link goes to a list of law-enforcement dealers; select-fire submachine guns are tightly controlled almost everywhere. If you are a private collector, treat any claim of a sale with great caution and check your local law before you do anything.

Heckler & Koch itself makes the UMP-H, a detailed replica without a firing function, and the UMP-FX, a dye-marking training system. Both are listed in its military and law-enforcement section, and nothing we found shows them on sale to private buyers. For other pieces from the films, browse the weapons collection.
