The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Globe-Trotter Original Brown Suitcase (Spectre)

The Globe-Trotter Original in brown is a handmade English suitcase in vulcanised fibreboard, finished with matching brown leather trims. Daniel Craig’s Bond carries one while travelling in Morocco in Spectre, and it is the very first of Globe-Trotter’s retro suitcase designs.

In Spectre, Daniel Craig’s Bond carries a brown fibreboard suitcase with leather corners and nothing flashy about it. It is the Globe-Trotter Original Brown suitcase, and in our view the right case for a man who would rather his luggage gathered character with use than stayed pristine.

In the film

Bond uses the case when he travels in Morocco in Spectre (2015), and carries it while waiting with Madeleine Swann in the desert. The case on screen appears to be the 26-inch Original, though we have not found Globe-Trotter confirming the size. Globe-Trotter also makes a separate Spectre range in navy with black Saffiano leather corners; that is not the brown case Bond carries.

The details of the Globe-Trotter Original Brown suitcase

Vulcanised fibreboard. Globe-Trotter builds its cases from a patented vulcanised fibreboard, which the maker describes as durable and lightweight. For a case meant to be used for years, that combination matters more than any finish.

The first design. The Original is the first of Globe-Trotter’s retro suitcase designs, and the brand has made luggage in England since 1897. It is the design the retro range starts from.

Brown on brown. In this colourway the body is brown fibreboard with matching brown leather trims, so the case reads as a single tone, unlike the navy and black version.

Handmade in England. Globe-Trotter makes its cases by hand in England and covers them with a five-year warranty. It lists hand-painted initials as a personalisation service; ask whether it is available on this size.

Using it now

Brown sits easily with the desert palette of the film, and with the way most of us should travel: one good case rather than a matched set. We would pair it with a waxed cotton jacket, a soft-shouldered suit in oatmeal or grey flannel, and suede shoes.

Choosing the size. Globe-Trotter describes the 26-inch as its Medium Check-In, which it calls just the right size for many travellers. We would choose it for a long weekend or a week away, and keep the carry-on size for one-night trips. Check the maker’s current dimensions before you buy, as we have not been able to confirm them for this exact case.

Choosing the colour. Brown is the colour from the film. If you want something more formal, we would look at navy, though it is not Bond’s case.

Living with it. It is a case to use rather than preserve, and we would not fuss over the odd mark.

Questions

Is this the suitcase Bond carries in Spectre?

It is believed to be the Globe-Trotter Original in brown. Several sources identify it, and the case on screen appears to be the 26-inch size, though that is a visual match rather than a maker statement.

Is it the same as the Globe-Trotter Spectre suitcase?

No. Globe-Trotter’s Spectre range is a separate edition in navy with black Saffiano leather corners and brass hardware. The brown Original is the case Bond carries in Morocco.

What is a Globe-Trotter suitcase made from?

Vulcanised fibreboard, a patented material that Globe-Trotter describes as durable and lightweight, with leather trims. The cases are made by hand in England.

Does a Globe-Trotter come with a warranty?

Yes. Globe-Trotter covers its cases for five years.
