The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Samsonite Spark Suitcase (Die Another Day)

Samsonite’s Spark is one of the luggage lines listed among the cases seen in Die Another Day, though we cannot place it in a particular scene. The 2002 case is out of production and found second-hand, while the current Spark SNG carries the name forward as a soft-sided, expandable suitcase.

Not every object in a Bond film earns a close-up. Samsonite cases appear in Die Another Day, and the Spark is one of the lines named among them. The Samsonite Spark suitcase is the quietest piece we cover from the film, and perhaps the most useful: a soft-sided case that does its job and leaves its owner free to think about something else.

In the film

Our catalogue records cases from Samsonite’s Xylem, Streamline and Spark lines appearing in Die Another Day (2002). We have not been able to tie the Spark to a named character or scene, so this is the closest match we can identify rather than a confirmed piece of screen history. Samsonite luggage also appears elsewhere in Pierce Brosnan’s Bond films, which makes the brand a fair stand-in for the travelling life the character leads.

Samsonite Spark: what is sold now

The case from 2002 is out of production. Samsonite still sells a direct successor under the same name, the Spark SNG, which one reviewer describes as an update of the classic Spark range, now lighter. We describe that current case below, not the 2002 original, and the buy button on this page searches for second-hand originals.

Four sizes. The Spark SNG comes as a 55cm cabin case (43 litres, 2.5kg), a 67cm (82 or 92 litres, 3.2kg), a 79cm (124 or 140 litres, 3.7kg) and an 82cm (152 or 173 litres, 4.1kg). The three larger sizes expand, which is useful on the way home.

Soft sides, plenty of room. A UK luggage reviewer ranked it first for capacity among the suitcases it compared, and singled out two lockable front pockets and large double wheels. The same review notes that the telescopic handle is a little shakier than usual for Samsonite, and that the front pockets need packing with care or the case tips.

Owning it now

A suitcase is the one object a traveller wants to forget about, so the right one is the plainest that suits the trip. We would take the 55cm for a long weekend and the 67cm for a week, and leave the larger sizes for people who check bags as a matter of course. Black polyester hides the knocks of the baggage hall better than anything glossy.

Original or successor? If you want the case as it looked in 2002, search second-hand and check the wheels, zips and handle before you pay. If you simply want a good soft case with the Spark name, buy the current SNG new from Samsonite or an authorised retailer.

In the same spirit

Two softer, more characterful bags for the same kind of journey, offered as alternatives and not as anything seen in the film: the J.Crew Abingdon Weekender Bag and the Bennett Winch S.C. Holdall with Suit Carrier.

Questions

Did James Bond carry a Samsonite Spark in Die Another Day?

We cannot say that. Our catalogue lists Spark cases among the Samsonite luggage seen in the film, but names no character or scene, so we treat the link as likely rather than proven.

Is the Samsonite Spark still made?

The name continues as the Spark SNG, a lighter update of the classic range. The 2002 case itself is out of production and turns up second-hand.

Which Samsonite Spark size is best for travel?

The 55cm suits a cabin bag and a long weekend, and the 67cm suits a week away. The three larger sizes expand if you need extra room.

Where can I buy a second-hand Samsonite Spark?

Search eBay for the exact name and check the wheels, zips and handle in the listing photographs before you buy.
