Bond’s ties are rarely the subject of a scene, and the one at the end of Spectre is no exception: plain black silk, nothing to catch the eye. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears the Thomas Pink black tie with a charcoal check three-piece suit as the film closes, and it does its job so well that you notice the suit, not the tie. That is, in our view, exactly why a tie like it is worth owning.

In the film

Bond wears a black Thomas Pink silk tie in the final scene of Spectre (2015), with the charcoal check three-piece suit. Enthusiast sources name it as Thomas Pink’s Alston, with a blade about 8cm wide. We could not find the Alston on sale new, and we treat it as out of production; it is found second-hand. Thomas Pink’s current black silk tie is the nearest new alternative, but it is not the identical tie.

The details of the Thomas Pink black tie

Solid black, woven not printed. Thomas Pink’s current black tie is a textured plain woven silk. In our view that reads as tailoring, where a satin black reads as evening wear.

8cm at the blade. Thomas Pink’s current black silk tie has an 8cm blade, which we think sits comfortably against the lapels of a modern three-piece. Much narrower can look dated; much wider swallows a waistcoat.

100% silk, hand finished in Italy. Thomas Pink says its silk ties are hand finished in Italy, by the same craftsmen who finish its knitted ties.

Wearing it now

A plain black tie is a sober choice, and often misread. Worn with a pale blue or white shirt and a charcoal or dark grey suit, it is sober and sharp. It suits funerals, evenings at the opera that stop short of dinner dress, and any occasion where the room is a little more serious than you are.

Pair it with grey. A charcoal check is the combination in the film, and we would not improve on it. A white shirt keeps it crisp; a pale blue one softens it.

Keep the knot small. A four-in-hand, slightly off-centre, suits a black tie better than a full Windsor. Let the dimple form naturally.

Do not confuse it with black tie. A long black tie is not dinner dress. For a dinner jacket, wear a bow tie. This is the tie for the suit.

One to buy once. Of all the ties in a drawer, we think a plain black one is the least likely to date, and it is worth buying well. See more in our accessories.

Questions

What tie does Bond wear at the end of Spectre?

A plain black silk tie by Thomas Pink, worn with the charcoal check three-piece suit in the closing scene. Enthusiast sources name it as the Alston.

Can you still buy the tie from the film?

Not new, as far as we can find. The Alston is out of production and found second-hand. Thomas Pink’s current black silk tie is a close route to the same look rather than the identical tie.

Can you wear a long black tie to a black tie event?

No. Black tie calls for a bow tie. A long black tie suits dark suits and sombre occasions, not dinner jackets.

How much does it cost?

Thomas Pink’s closest current black silk tie has an RRP of US$105 at the time of writing, October 2026.
