The seats at the Spectre meeting are easy to overlook, yet they set the tone of the room, with brown hide, turned wood and the weight of something made to a very old pattern. The Tudor Oak Greenwich Early English chair is the model recorded around that table, and in our view it is a quiet way to bring a little of that gravity into an ordinary house.

In the film

The chair appears in Spectre (2015), around the table at the meeting of the organisation’s members. It is seating for the room rather than a piece Daniel Craig’s Bond uses himself.

The details of the Tudor Oak Greenwich Early English chair

A 17th-century pattern. Tudor Oak makes the chair to a traditional 17th-century English design. It is a pattern with a long record, and that is its appeal: nothing here is fashionable, so nothing will date.

Turned underframe. The underframe is turned, meaning the rails and legs are shaped on a lathe rather than cut square. It gives the chair a rhythm of rounded forms below the seat and keeps the upholstered parts from looking heavy.

Coffee brown hide. The chair is upholstered in hide in coffee brown. It is a dark colour that sits quietly against oak, plaster and stone.

A British maker. Tudor Oak is a British bespoke furniture company. The chair carries the product code GW-3600-L, which is the reference to quote when you enquire.

Owning it now

These are dining chairs in spirit, and we would use them that way. Buy in a set rather than singly: a table wants consistency, and the strength of the chair is in repetition, as the film’s table shows. Four or six around a plain oak or dark-stained table, with nothing on it but a single bowl or a pair of candlesticks, is the look to aim for.

They also work away from the table. One at a writing desk gives a study some seriousness, and a single chair in a hall or at the end of a landing is both furniture and a place to put on shoes. We would keep the room around them plain: limewashed or painted walls, a stone or boarded floor, linen at the window.

Care. Keep hide away from radiators and direct sun, which dry it and fade the colour. Wipe it with a dry cloth, and use a leather conditioner sparingly once or twice a year.

Buying. Tudor Oak is a bespoke maker, so we would ask about lead times, quantities and any changes to the finish when you enquire. The price is set by the maker and can change, so check its page for the current figure.
