Underwear is the part of a wardrobe nobody photographs, which is rather the point. For Spectre, Sunspel supplied its navy and white underwear for Daniel Craig’s Bond to wear, and the Sunspel stretch cotton brief was part of that delivery. We can’t say it is visible on screen, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we can say is that it is the sort of thing a considered wardrobe starts with: plain, well cut and made by a firm that has been at it since 1860.

In the film

Sunspel says it sent stretch cotton briefs and trunks, in navy and white, to be worn by Craig’s Bond in Spectre. We have found no confirmation of a scene in which the briefs are seen, so this is a story of supply rather than screen time. See the Spectre film page for the pieces that are visible.

The details of the Sunspel stretch cotton brief

Cotton with some give. Sunspel describes its stretch cotton underwear as a durable cotton and elastane blend, made for comfort and support with a refined finish. Its stretch cotton trunks are 92% cotton and 8% elastane; check the brief’s own page for its composition.

A precise fit. Sunspel positions its briefs as a precise fit that suits everyday wear. A brief is a minimal cut with no leg, which is why we’d reach for it under close-fitting trousers.

Navy or white. These are the two colours Sunspel sent for the film. Navy is the quieter of the pair and, in our view, the one to start with.

A long-established maker. Sunspel dates from 1860. It also says John Hill, great-grandson of its founder, introduced the boxer short to Britain in 1947.

Wearing it now

Underwear is the one part of a wardrobe nobody sees and everybody notices when it is wrong. We’d treat this as a basic to buy well and replace without fuss, rather than as a novelty from a film.

Which colour. Navy under dark trousers and tailoring, white under pale linen and chinos. If you buy one colour, we’d choose navy.

Brief or trunk. Sunspel supplied both for the film. The brief is the more minimal cut and, in our view, the better choice under close-fitting trousers. If you prefer a longer leg, the trunk is the alternative.

Sizing. Sunspel’s stretch cotton range runs from XS to XXL. The button takes you to Sunspel’s range of briefs, where the stretch cotton style is sold in several colours, so check that navy is in stock. Check the maker’s size guide before ordering, and note that Sunspel lists 14-day returns.

Questions

Does Bond wear Sunspel underwear in Spectre?

It is unconfirmed. Sunspel says it supplied navy and white stretch cotton briefs and trunks for Daniel Craig to wear in the film, but we have not confirmed that any of it appears on screen.

What is the Sunspel stretch cotton brief made of?

A blend of cotton and elastane, according to Sunspel. Its stretch cotton trunks are 92% cotton and 8% elastane, and the brief’s product page gives the exact composition for the colour you are buying.

Did Sunspel make other pieces for Spectre?

Yes. Alongside the briefs, Sunspel supplied its stretch boxer brief and the Riviera crew neck T-shirt for Craig’s Bond.

More from the film is in our clothing archive, and Daniel Craig’s Bond has the wider picture.
