Most of what Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in Rome is black and quiet, and the gloves are no exception. The Dents Fleming driving gloves are unlined, cut close to the hand and fastened with a snap at the wrist. Dents says they were designed with Craig for Spectre, and they are a small purchase that earns its place in an autumn coat pocket.

In the film

Bond wears the gloves in the Rome sequence of Spectre (2015), at the funeral and at the wheel of the Aston Martin DB10. Dents sells the same glove as the Fleming. The scenes are covered on our Spectre page, and more of his wardrobe is collected under Daniel Craig.

The details of the Dents Fleming driving gloves

English hairsheep leather. The leather is smooth and fine, which keeps the glove slim across the palm and the back of the hand. That is what lets you feel the wheel rather than a layer of padding.

No lining. There is nothing between hand and leather, so the glove fits close and folds small enough for a jacket pocket. It also means these are gloves for cool weather rather than deep winter.

Inseam construction. The gloves are hand cut and sewn with the stitching on the inside, so the seams do not show. The line from fingertip to knuckle stays clean, which suits the narrower sleeves and cuffs of current tailoring.

Vented fingers. The fingers are vented, which suits a long drive and gives the black leather a little texture. Dents has left out the classic keyhole cut-out, so the back of the hand stays uninterrupted.

A banded wrist with a snap. The cuff is cinched and closed with a snap, so the glove stays put under a coat sleeve and leaves no gap at the wrist. Fine hand-sewn points run along the back of the hand.

Made in England. The Fleming is made in England, from English hairsheep leather.

Wearing it now

These are the gloves for the man who drives and walks in the same coat. Black leather goes with a navy or charcoal overcoat, a dark suit and black or dark brown shoes, and it does not compete with anything. A funeral is the obvious occasion; a formal winter morning is another.

Because they are unlined, we would treat them as autumn and spring gloves, and for a cold car on a clear day. In a hard frost you will want a lined pair, and the Fleming is then best kept for the drive itself. Carry them rather than leaving them in a pocket to crush.

Fit. Dents cuts the Fleming close and slim, so size with care. Overland lists S (7.5–8 in), M (8.5–9 in), L (9.5–10 in) and XL (10.5–11 in). A leather glove should be snug across the palm but should never pull at the fingertips.

Care. If they get wet, let them dry naturally and away from a radiator. Heat stiffens leather, and a pair this thin has little margin for it. Store them flat.

Questions

Are these the gloves Bond wears in Spectre?

Yes. Dents sells the Fleming as the glove worn by Daniel Craig in Spectre, where Bond wears them in Rome at the funeral and while driving the Aston Martin DB10.

Are the Dents Fleming gloves lined?

No. They are unlined, which gives the slim fit and the feel at the wheel. They suit cool weather; for real cold you will want a lined glove.

Where are Dents Fleming gloves made?

They are made in England from English hairsheep leather. They are hand cut and sewn with inseam stitching.

How should driving gloves fit?

Close, without strain. The Fleming is cut slim, so the leather should sit snug across the palm and the cuff should close easily at the wrist. If you are between sizes, try both.

More from the film is on the Spectre page, and more small things worth carrying are in accessories.
