The duel at Blades is the most physical scene in Die Another Day that has nothing to do with gadgets, and the equipment is real. Leon Paul, the London fencing outfitter, made custom masks and uniforms for Pierce Brosnan’s Bond and Toby Stephens’ Graves. The Leon Paul fencing mask is the one piece of that kit an ordinary person can buy in a close relative, which is the point of this page.

In the film

Bond and Gustav Graves fence at Blades, the London club where their rivalry turns physical. Both men wear Leon Paul masks and the maker’s custom uniforms, according to our catalogue evidence. A source in our research adds that the film’s fencing master, Bob Anderson, always used Leon Paul equipment, which is why the production went to the company.

The details

Custom for the film. The masks on screen were made for the production and are not a catalogue item. We cannot give you a model number, and we will not guess one.

Three weapons, three masks. Leon Paul sells masks by weapon. The epee, foil and sabre masks differ in shape and in how much of the head and neck they cover, so choose the one that matches the weapon you will actually use.

Safety levels. The maker lists its masks by protection: Level 1 at 350N and Level 2 to the FIE standard. A beginner’s club mask and a competition mask are different products with different prices.

Washable and renewable. The X-Change range is described by the maker as the lightest and most breathable it makes, with a patented design that is fully washable and lets you replace worn parts rather than the whole mask.

Owning it now

If you fence, buy the mask your club and weapon require, and fit it before you commit. If you do not, a fencing mask is an odd but handsome object for a study wall, in the way a well-kept flying helmet is. In our view the plain white traditional mask looks best: no flags, no colours, just wire mesh and cloth bib.

What it costs. At the time of writing, October 2026, the maker’s US store lists the Arena Traditional Epee Mask at US$215 and the FIE Traditional Epee Mask at US$323. The X-Change FIE Contour Foil Mask is US$438. Prices change, so check the page before you order.
