Some objects in the Bond films are there to be noticed. The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is there to be sat in. It is a chair for a room where decisions are made slowly, and the Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair is the one M keeps in her office.

In the film

The chair is seen briefly in M’s office in Casino Royale (2006), when Judi Dench’s M is told that Bond has been poisoned. Our catalogue records it in four other Bond films as well, from You Only Live Twice to Die Another Day, sometimes with its ottoman. It is a background object, but a deliberate one.

The details of the Eames Lounge Chair

A 1956 design. Charles and Ray Eames designed the chair for Herman Miller, which released it in 1956. One maker listing gives the chair and ottoman as models 670 and 671.

Finishes. Herman Miller sells the chair in a range of leathers, fabrics and wood finishes. The version in our catalogue is black leather with a brown wood shell, and in our view that is the combination to choose: it is dark enough for a study and warm enough for a living room.

The ottoman. The ottoman is sold with the chair, and we would buy the pair together.

Owning it now

This is a chair for one corner of one room, not a piece to scatter around. Put it by a window or a bookshelf with a good lamp, and leave space around it so the shape reads. It sits well with plain walls, wool rugs and dark wood, and it looks out of place in a crowded room. Buy it new from Herman Miller or an authorised dealer. Replicas are common, and we would not choose one.

Expect to save for it. At the time of writing, Herman Miller’s store lists one configuration at US$9,395, and the Eames Office lists the range from US$7,950 to US$11,495 depending on finish.
