Not every weapon in Bond’s world is made to be pointed at a person. The Riffe Euro E-55 speargun that Daniel Craig’s Bond carries across the deck of his yacht in Jamaica is a fishing tool, and a well-regarded one: a short wooden gun built for freedivers who hunt on a single breath. It is the quietest object in the arsenal of No Time To Die, and in our view the most sympathetic.

In the film

Retired Bond is seen with the speargun in Jamaica, in the outfit he wears for yacht fishing, briefly, as he walks from the boat to his house. The catalogue notes that the exact model appears to be the E-55, where 55 refers to the length of the gun; Riffe’s wooden Euro range is sold in that size. The film itself gives it a few seconds, and then it is gone.

The details of the Riffe Euro E-55 speargun

Teak, laminated. The stock is made from three vertical laminated sections of teak, and the barrel is cut with a rectangular section and rounded corners. Riffe says this gives the gun its strength along the beam while keeping the profile low, which is what lets a wooden gun move through the water without wobble.

Low profile by design. Riffe describes itself as the maker that pioneered the Euro-style wooden gun, a shape now common across the market. The front muzzle is bolted on for extra strength, and the handle is reinforced nylon with a cushioned overmould.

Stainless where it counts. The two-piece trigger mechanism is stainless steel, with a damper added to quieten it, and a side-rotating, spring-loaded safety. Threaded stainless inserts are built in so a reel can be mounted.

Shaft and bands. The gun comes with a 9/32in (7.1mm) shaft and two 5/8in (16mm) rubber bands. Riffe also sells a double-flopper shaft upgrade and a rest tab separately.

A stated ethic. Riffe’s own page makes a point of conservation. Its founder, Jay Riffe, argues for taking only what is needed to eat and leaving the rest. It is an unexpectedly good fit for a Bond who has stepped back from his old work.

Owning it now

This is a tool for people who dive, and it should be bought by someone who intends to. If that is you, the E-55 is the shortest of the Euro range, which suits reef work and tight water; Riffe sells longer models up to the E-120 for open-water hunting. For everyone else, it makes a handsome object: warm teak and stainless, hung on a wall rack or laid along a console.

Rules on spearguns, and on where and what you may fish, differ by country, state and stretch of water, so check local fishing regulations before you buy. We know of no official replica, so if you only want the look, we would suggest a rack and a second-hand gun from a dive shop rather than a copy.
