The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Alexander Olch Avery Necktie 007 (No Time To Die)

A burgundy silk twill tie with bourette spots, handmade in New York by Alexander Olch. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears it in the Matera scenes of No Time To Die, in a 3.5-inch width made exclusively for the film, and it is a broad, quiet tie worth owning.

The tie Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in Matera is broad, deep burgundy and slightly textured, and it gives the outfit its warmth. The Alexander Olch Avery necktie is handmade in New York from Italian silk. In our view it is one of the more useful pieces to come out of the Craig films, because you can wear it on an ordinary Tuesday.

In the film

Bond wears it in the Matera sequences of No Time To Die, where it completes his chase outfit. Olch created the 3.5-inch width exclusively for the film, and it is sold today as The Avery Necktie (007). Our No Time To Die page has the rest of the film’s wardrobe.

The details of the Alexander Olch Avery necktie

Silk twill with bourette spots. The ground is a lustrous burgundy twill, woven in Italy from 100% silk. Flecks of coarser bourette silk run through it, so the surface has some texture up close while the colour stays deep and even.

A broad blade. The 007 width is 3.5 inches, wider than Olch’s 2.5-inch standard and its 3-inch width, which the maker describes as having a substantial blade and a fuller knot. The effect is a tie with presence, a more traditional proportion than a skinny tie.

Made by hand. The tie is handmade in New York at Olch’s atelier. That is the reason to choose it over a mass-made tie of similar colour.

Length. It runs to about 58 inches. Olch will make a tie longer or shorter on request by email, which is worth doing if you are tall or wear a high trouser rise.

Wearing it now

Burgundy is the most forgiving strong colour a man can put at his throat. It suits navy and charcoal suits, grey flannel and a brown tweed jacket equally well, and it asks for little else: a white or pale blue shirt, and a plain knit or nothing at all by way of pocket square. We would keep the rest of the outfit quiet and let the tie be the single point of colour.

Which width? The 3.5-inch 007 width is the one from the film, and it wants a shirt with a reasonable collar and a jacket with lapels of some width, otherwise it will look out of scale. If your suits are cut slimmer, Olch’s 2.5-inch standard is the safer choice. Choose the width in the drop-down on the maker’s page.

Other colours. The standard Avery necktie is also made in navy, brown, green and grey. The burgundy is the one Bond wears.

Care. Dry clean only. Untie it at the end of the day rather than pulling the knot loose, and hang it so the blade can relax.
