Not every Bond shoe is black. In GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan’s Bond spends the Monte Carlo chapter in walnut-brown brogues, and the Church’s Chetwynd is the right pair for a man who wants a brown shoe that works with a suit. It has stayed in Church’s range, and you can still buy it.
In the film
Bond wears the Chetwynd in Monaco during the Aston Martin DB5 chase and later when he boards the Manticore yacht. It also appears with the navy cable sweater outfit and the Monte Carlo casual outfit. Church’s brogues from the film have also come up at auction, at Christie’s and Julien’s.
The details
Nevada leather. The film pair is a walnut brown in Nevada leather, a calf with a lightly burnished surface. Church’s still lists a Chetwynd in Nevada leather, in brown, at US$1,320.
A full brogue. The toe cap and the wing are perforated, with broguing along the seams. A full brogue is the most decorated of the formal shoes and the most country of them, which is why it is happy in tweed and cord.
The 173 last. Church’s builds the Chetwynd on its signature 173 last, which a commentator in our research calls blunt, and which suits a round-toed brogue. It is a broad, comfortable shape rather than an elegant one.
Wearing it now
Wear the brown brogue with grey flannel, navy and mid-brown tweed. It is the right shoe for a suit worn on a weekend or in the country, and it goes with dark denim. Black tie is out of the question, and it is better not to wear it with a city charcoal suit. Rotate your pairs and keep a shoe tree in each. An older, six-eyelet version appeared in the film, so the current shoe is a close relative.
Choosing. The Chetwynd comes in calf leather, Nevada leather and a polished binder version at US$1,550, listed as available soon. For the film, choose Nevada leather in brown.
Care. Nevada leather takes a cream polish well. Brush after each wear, use shoe trees, and give the shoes a day to rest between wears so the leather dries out.
Resoling. The Chetwynd can be resoled, so a pair that is looked after lasts for years. Ask the maker or a good cobbler about the sole before the first wear.
