When Daniel Craig took over the role, Bond’s sidearm changed with him. The Walther P99 had been Pierce Brosnan’s gun, and Craig’s Bond carries it in Casino Royale too: a bigger, polymer-framed pistol replacing the small steel Walther of the earlier decades. This is the Walther P99, one of the few Bond weapons to cross two actors.
In the film
Craig’s Bond wears the P99 in a Vega holster on his belt during the Madagascar chase, and carries it at the Ocean Club. It had arrived with Brosnan: our catalogue records Bond picking it from Wai Lin’s armoury in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), keeping it through The World Is Not Enough and cleaning it at his desk in Die Another Day. The Royal Armouries notes that Casino Royale is where Craig adopts it.
The details of the Walther P99
Built for police work. Wikipedia describes the P99 as a semi-automatic pistol developed by Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen of Ulm for law enforcement, among other users. It is the departure point for the plastic-framed Walther pistols that followed.
The model Walther lists. Walther’s US shop currently lists the P99 AS in 9mm and a P99 Final Edition in 9mm with an olive-drab finish. Sportsman’s Warehouse lists a P99 AS with a 4in barrel and a 15+1 magazine. Variants are made in 9mm, .40 S&W and 9×21mm, with several trigger options.
The holster. In the film the pistol rides in a Vega belt holster, which is the detail to copy if you want the look rather than the hardware.
Owning it now
The P99 is a regulated firearm, and the rules on buying one depend on where you live. Expect to deal with a licensed dealer and whatever licence or permit your local law requires; in some countries private ownership is not possible at all. Walther’s US store currently lists both a standard P99 AS and a Final Edition, so check which is in stock.
For collectors, the P99’s interest is its double role, carried by two different Bonds. A P99 AS in standard black is the plain way to get the shape from the film; the Final Edition is the one Walther itself is selling as a last run. We know of no licensed deactivated or replica version, so we do not recommend one. For more equipment from the series, browse the weapons collection.
