The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Bollinger R.D. 2002 Extra Brut Champagne (Spectre)

Bollinger’s R.D. 2002 is a late-disgorged vintage Champagne, 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, aged for more than a decade on its lees before release. Daniel Craig’s Bond drinks it in Spectre, and it is the right bottle for an evening that deserves more than a non-vintage.

Bollinger R.D. 2002 is the Champagne Daniel Craig’s Bond drinks in Spectre (2015), the fourteenth Bond film in which the house appears. R.D. stands for récemment dégorgé: the wine rests on its lees for years and is disgorged only shortly before release, which keeps it fresher than its age suggests. It is a dry, serious bottle, and a quiet one.

Drinking Bollinger R.D. 2002 now

This is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, finished with a low dosage of around 3–4g a litre. Critics describe a savoury, chalky style, with stone fruit, toasted nuts and brioche, and note that it needs time in the glass to show its best.

We would pour it with food rather than as an aperitif: oysters, duck or a piece of aged Comté. Use a white-wine glass rather than a flute, and serve it cool rather than ice-cold. Reviewers expect it to hold well into the 2030s, so there is no hurry to open it, though there is little reason to wait for a grander occasion than a good dinner for two.

Disgorgement dates vary from bottle to bottle, so ask the retailer which one you are buying. At the time of writing, Woodland Hills Wine Company lists it as pre-arrival, with stock due in February 2027.
