Before Bond is cleared to return to the field in Skyfall, MI6 measures him. The physiology assessment laboratory is fitted with real equipment, and the Cosmed BOD POD is part of it. It is a body-composition chamber that uses air displacement plethysmography to work out fat and fat-free mass, and it is sold to clinics, universities and sports labs rather than to the public.
Cosmed announced that it had been chosen to outfit the lab for Skyfall (2012). Our catalogue places the BOD POD in that set, alongside a Fitmate Pro and a treadmill. It is background equipment, and the film does not make it a feature.
Using it now
The BOD POD measures total weight, body fat percentage and fat-free mass, and can also measure thoracic gas volume, resting metabolic rate and total energy expenditure. The maker lists it as suitable for older people, people with disabilities, pregnant women, young children from 2 to 6 with the Pediatric Option, and people weighing up to 250kg.
It is a professional instrument, so the practical route for most readers is a test, not a purchase. Cosmed keeps a test-site locator on its website, and a session at a university or sports-science lab is the way to see what the machine reports. If you run a clinic or a gym and are considering the current GS-X model, ask Cosmed about pricing, installation and calibration. The unit in the film may be an earlier model than the one now sold.
