In No Time To Die, Q works on a Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme: a very sturdy convertible laptop built for rough conditions rather than for desks and cafés. It is an unfashionable choice, and in our view that is exactly why it is worth a second look.
In the film
Q, played by Ben Whishaw, uses the Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme in No Time To Die (2021). It is set on a laptop stand in his home office and appears in a number of other scenes. The best view is reported to come aboard the C-17, when Daniel Craig’s Bond, Nomi and Q talk to M, and it can also be seen in photographs in No Time To Die: The Making Of The Film. Catalogue sources identify it as the 7204, though one suggests the near-identical 7214 is possible, so we name the model with some care.
The details of the Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme
A pivoting screen. It is a convertible, so the display pivots to give the machine tablet-like use. PCMag, reviewing it in October 2014, called it a tough hybrid with a pivoting screen. For a man who annotates and sketches, that matters more than thinness ever will.
A stylus on a tether. Dell’s owner’s manual covers fitting and removing the stylus and its tether, which suggests the pen is meant to stay with the machine.
Press-latch doors. The manual includes a procedure for opening the press-latch doors. It is a practical, working detail, not a styled one.
Serviceable inside. The memory is a removable DDR3L SODIMM module, and the battery, hard drive and keyboard each have their own removal procedure in Dell’s manual. Dell also publishes a Rigid Handle Installation Guide, so a carry handle is an option on these machines.
Owning it now
We would be plain about this: it is a 2014 machine, and the pleasure of owning it is character, not performance. Resale listings show configurations such as the Intel Core i7-4650U, and owners online report that the touchscreens on these models are prone to ghost touches. It is not a laptop we would recommend as your only computer.
Where it makes sense is as a second machine: a tough, slightly eccentric notebook for the workshop, the boat, the car boot or the study, kept on a stand much like Q’s. It suits a man who values things built for a job over things built for a showroom. If you buy one, buy it pre-owned from a seller who documents the screen’s condition, and confirm that the software you rely on still runs on it.
Dell no longer makes it and we found no new stock, so there is no price to quote; the button on this page is an eBay search for second-hand examples. For more from Q’s world, browse the rest of the gadgets and electronics.

Questions
What laptop does Q use in No Time To Die?
Q uses a Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme, catalogued as the 7204 convertible notebook. It is set on a laptop stand in his home office.
Is it the 7204 or the 7214?
Most sources say 7204. One notes that the 7214 seems identical, so on screen we would treat the two as indistinguishable.
Can you still buy the Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme?
Not new: it is out of production, and we found no current stock. Dell still hosts manuals and support for it, but the machines are now mostly sold used, so inspect the touchscreen and battery carefully.
Is it a good everyday laptop today?
Not really. It dates from 2014 and runs older hardware. We would treat it as a characterful second machine, not a main one.
