Nokia arrived at No Time To Die as the film’s official phones partner, and the Nokia 8.3 5G was the handset it put forward. It was HMD’s first 5G phone: a large, plain slab in a single colour, Polar Night. It is a long way from a gadget with a trick built in. We think it is more interesting for that.
In the film
Nokia said that Nomi, played by Lashana Lynch, would use the new phone and its 5G abilities in No Time To Die (2021), and its advertising campaign shows her texting T from it on a London rooftop. We have not been able to confirm the Nokia 8.3 5G in a specific scene of the finished film, so we do not call it screen-used. See our page for No Time To Die for the wider picture.
The Nokia 8.3 5G No Time To Die phone in detail
A large, plain screen. The display is a 6.81-inch IPS panel at 1080 x 2400. It is big enough to read on properly, and at 220g and 9mm thick the whole phone is a substantial thing to carry.
Sensible chip, sensible software. Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage. It launched on Android 10 in the Android One form, with an upgrade path to Android 12, so the software stays uncluttered.
Zeiss-branded cameras. The rear has a quad array led by a 64MP main sensor, and the front camera is 24MP. Video goes up to 4K.
Old-fashioned good sense. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD slot, NFC and a 4500mAh battery. The fingerprint reader sits on the side.
Using it now
The Nokia 8.3 5G was released in September 2020 and has been discontinued, so this is a second-hand proposition. We would treat it as a curiosity with a use, not as a daily phone for a man who wants current software. If you want it, buy it for what it is: a considered, unfussy Android phone with a small place in the history of the franchise’s product partnerships.
Our button runs an eBay search for the Nokia 8.3 5G, which is where second-hand handsets are found. Check three things before you pay. Confirm which model you are buying (TA-1243 or TA-1251) and that its 5G bands (1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 28, 38, 40, 41, 66, 71 and 78) suit your network. Ask about battery condition. And check what software support remains. It sits naturally alongside other gadgets and electronics from the films, and the use is best kept honest: not as costume, but as a phone.
