The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot Titanium Silver Limited Edition (Quantum of Solace)

The titanium silver Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot is the camera phone Daniel Craig’s Bond uses in Quantum of Solace, including at the opera in Bregenz. It has a 5-megapixel camera behind a slide-out lens cover. It is out of production and found second-hand, so we link to an eBay search.

Phones, for Daniel Craig’s Bond, are tools first. In Quantum of Solace the tool is a slim feature phone with a camera behind a sliding cover, and the job is surveillance. The Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot was a serious camera phone in 2008 and is a well-judged curiosity now. It also makes a quiet argument for carrying less. This page is about the titanium silver limited edition used in the film.

In the film

Bond uses the titanium silver C902 in Quantum of Solace (2008). The Mobile Phone Museum records him using it to photograph members of the Quantum organisation at the Bregenz opera during a performance of Tosca. He also receives a message on it that helps him identify Dominic Greene. Our Quantum of Solace page has the rest of the film’s objects.

The details of the Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot

A slide-out lens cover. Opening the cover wakes the 5-megapixel camera, so there is no menu to hunt through. It is the sort of mechanical gesture that modern touchscreens have lost.

Autofocus and an LED flash. The camera has autofocus and an LED flash, and it records video at 320p. That is modest by current standards, but it was a serious camera phone when it was new.

Slim and light. It measures 108 x 49 x 10.5mm and weighs 107g, so it sits in a jacket pocket without disturbing the line of the cloth. The 2.0-inch screen is small, and that is part of the charm.

The limited edition. Sony Ericsson announced the titanium silver limited edition in October 2008, to coincide with the film. According to the Mobile Phone Museum, it came with interactive 007 content preloaded on a memory card and a spy-style game. The wider range was sold in Swift Black, Luscious Red, Titanium Silver and Cinnamon Bronze.

Memory and battery. There is 160MB of internal storage and a Memory Stick Micro slot taking cards up to 8GB. The removable 930mAh battery (BST-38) is rated at up to 400 hours of standby on 2G.

Owning it now

This is not a phone to rely on every day, and we would not pretend otherwise. It is a feature phone from 2008, with no Wi-Fi and no GPS. It makes sense as a collector’s piece, a deliberate second phone for a weekend away, or a desk object with a story. The C902i variant adds 3G on 2100MHz, and the other variants are 2G only (GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900). Check what your local network still supports before you buy one for use rather than display.

Which version to choose. If the film connection matters, look for the titanium silver limited edition, and ask whether the original memory card and box are included. If you only want the phone, a handset in another colour gives you the same shape, in the spirit of the film rather than a claim to be the version Bond used.

Condition. The phone is out of production, so every example is second-hand or old stock. Our button runs an eBay search for the limited edition. Ask for clear photographs of the lens cover, the slider mechanism and the keypad, and confirm that the battery holds a charge. A well-kept example sits comfortably beside other gadgets and electronics from Bond’s world.

Questions

Is this the phone Bond uses in Quantum of Solace?

Yes. Bond uses the Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot in titanium silver, and Sony Ericsson announced a limited edition in that finish to coincide with the film.

What does Bond do with the C902?

He photographs members of the Quantum organisation at the Bregenz opera during Tosca, and he receives a message on the phone that helps him identify Dominic Greene.

Can you still buy the Sony Ericsson C902 new?

Not new. GSMArena lists the C902 as discontinued, so examples are found second-hand or as old stock. Condition and completeness vary widely, so look closely at the lens cover and the battery.

Will a C902 work on current networks?

Only where the network it was built for is still running. Most variants are 2G only (GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900), and only the C902i adds 3G on 2100MHz. Check what your network still supports before relying on it as a daily phone.
