The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tivoli Audio Model One Bluetooth Radio (No Time To Die)

The Tivoli Audio Model One Bluetooth is a compact, wood-cased AM/FM radio that also streams from a phone. A Tivoli Model One sits in Bond’s Jamaican villa in No Time To Die, though the film does not show whether it is this version.

A radio is easy to overlook in a film. In No Time To Die one sits quietly in the background of the Jamaican villa where Daniel Craig’s Bond has settled: a Tivoli Model One. The Tivoli Audio Model One Bluetooth radio is the version of that set that will also play from your phone, and in our view it is the better one to own.

In the film

Bond has a Tivoli Model One in his Jamaican house in No Time To Die (2021). It is set dressing rather than a plot device. You can just see it in the background, to the left of Bond as he pours himself a drink and Nomi asks whether it is his bedroom. The footage does not let us tell the standard Model One from the Bluetooth model, so we can only say that a Model One is there. We have written about the Bluetooth version because it is the one most people will want to live with.

The details of the Tivoli Audio Model One Bluetooth radio

A tuner and Bluetooth 5.1. It receives AM and FM, and it streams from a phone or laptop. Tivoli describes the Model One’s tuner as one that brings clarity to many of the weakest stations, which matters if you actually listen to the radio rather than keep it for show.

One driver, one voice. It has a single 3-inch full-range driver and a mono speaker design. That means one channel and no stereo image, which suits a kitchen, a study or a bedside table better than a hi-fi shelf.

A wooden cabinet. Tivoli describes the Model One’s handmade wood cabinet as acoustically inert, meaning the box adds as little colour of its own as possible. The Bluetooth model is listed by retailers in walnut with a beige front.

Proper connections. There is a 3.5mm auxiliary input for any source with a headphone socket, a stereo headphone output for late evenings, and a stereo line-level REC OUT. It is a small radio, but it has the sockets of a considered one.

Owning it now

This is a radio for a room you actually use. We would put it on a sideboard or shelf, within reach and away from a screen. Morning news on FM, a playlist from the phone in the evening, and nothing else competing for the surface.

Which version? Tivoli also sells the standard Model One, with AM/FM and an auxiliary input but no Bluetooth. If you stream at all, we would choose the Bluetooth model, since it takes a phone without a cable. If you want only the tuner, the standard set is the plainer purchase.

Where it works. It looks most natural beside books, a lamp and timber furniture. A single mono driver is not a substitute for speakers in a living room, so we would treat it as a second system for a second room.

Setting up. Tivoli lists a power supply and an FM antenna in the box of the standard Model One. Check the Bluetooth model’s contents on its page before you buy.

The Model One BT does, using Bluetooth 5.1. The standard Model One does not; it has AM/FM and a 3.5mm auxiliary input.

Does it have a headphone socket?

Yes. It has a stereo headphone output, a 3.5mm auxiliary input and a stereo line-level REC OUT.

Is it stereo?

No. It is a mono design with a single 3-inch full-range driver, so it will not draw a stereo image.
