The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Brunello Cucinelli Braided Leather Belt MAUIB324 (Spectre)

Brown woven leather with a solid tab and a polished gold buckle, worn by Daniel Craig’s Bond in the Moroccan desert in Spectre. It sits quietly with linen and gabardine, the least conspicuous piece in a judged outfit. A 2015 piece, now found second-hand.

Most of what Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in the Moroccan desert is easy to notice: a soft brown jacket, pale trousers, a knitted tie. The belt is not. The Brunello Cucinelli braided leather belt is the detail that anchors the outfit while attracting no attention, which is the best argument for owning one. It is brown, woven and plain, and it does a great deal of work for very little noise.

In the film

Bond wears it in Spectre (2015), threaded through the loops of the brown Brunello Cucinelli trousers he wears in Morocco. It is on screen as he and Madeleine wait in the desert for the car to collect them. It is worn with the Brunello Cucinelli jacket and trousers and a Tom Ford shirt and tie. The reference, MAUIB324 C4001, was identified by Bond wardrobe researchers rather than confirmed by the maker.

The details of the Brunello Cucinelli braided leather belt

Brown woven leather. The braiding gives the belt texture without pattern. At a glance it reads as a single warm brown, and the weave shows up only when you look closely.

A solid tab. Unlike some fully braided belts, this one ends in a plain tab with holes for the buckle prong. We think that keeps it neater at the waist than a belt woven all the way along.

A polished gold buckle. The buckle is single-pronged and polished. The shine is small and warm against the brown leather, which makes it look settled rather than flashy.

Wearing it now

This is a belt for the relaxed side of a wardrobe. Braiding is a summer, country and travel texture, so it belongs with linen, cotton gabardine, unstructured jackets and suede. Bond wears it with a soft jacket and a knitted tie, and we think that is the right level: smart, but not strict. Brown suede boots or loafers finish the idea.

We would not wear it with a dark business suit or anything black-tie. The weave is too casual for that, and a plain smooth belt is the better choice there.

Sizing. Choose a size that closes on the middle of the holes, so you have room either way as the seasons change. A belt on its last hole looks wrong in any outfit.

Availability. We could not find this reference on Brunello Cucinelli’s site, and as a 2015 piece it is a second-hand search; our button runs an eBay search for it.

The look without the label. If this exact reference is hard to find, a plain brown braided belt with a solid end tab and a simple polished buckle is a sensible route to the same look, though it will not be the belt from the film. More on the wider look in our accessories and Daniel Craig pages.

Questions

Is this the belt Bond wears in Spectre?

Yes, as far as the evidence goes. Bond wardrobe researchers identified it as Brunello Cucinelli reference MAUIB324 C4001, worn with the brown Morocco outfit. We have not seen confirmation from the maker.

What should I wear a braided leather belt with?

Wear it with chinos, linen trousers, cotton gabardine and soft jackets, and with suede or leather shoes in a matching brown. Keep it away from formal tailoring.

Can I still buy the Brunello Cucinelli MAUIB324 belt?

We could not find it on Brunello Cucinelli’s site, and it dates from 2015, so treat it as a second-hand search. Our button runs an eBay search for the reference; Brunello Cucinelli’s own boutiques are worth a call first.
