Anthony Horowitz’s last Bond novel begins at a funeral. With a Mind to Kill, published by Jonathan Cape in May 2022, finds Bond in custody and accused of the murder of M, while a group of former Smersh agents behind the Iron Curtain make plans for him. The book was part of a deal between Jonathan Cape, Vintage and Ian Fleming Publications.
In the books
This is a continuation novel, not one of Ian Fleming’s own. It is counted as the forty-first official Bond novel and Horowitz’s third, after Trigger Mortis and Forever and a Day. Bond is smuggled into hostile territory, and the story turns on whose orders he is following and whether he will keep to them when it matters.
Reading it now
We would read the three Horowitz books in order, though this one is easy to pick up on its own as a spy story. It is a hardback of 288 pages, a good length for a long flight or a wet weekend. Jonathan Cape’s listing mentioned signed copies for pre-order in the UK at publication; our link goes to the Amazon page for the novel.
