A peacoat is a naval garment, short and double-breasted, made to be buttoned to the chin in a wind. The one Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in Shanghai is a refinement of the idea: navy, cut close, with a small peak lapel and no lining to bulk it out. The Billy Reid Bond Peacoat is still in production, and it is, in our view, the most usable coat from the Craig films, because nothing about it needs explaining.
In the film
Bond wears a navy Billy Reid peacoat in the Shanghai scenes of Skyfall (2012), together with Acne trousers. The coat sold today is Billy Reid’s current Bond Peacoat. The maker says the first version dates back two decades and that it was originally named after its Bond Street store in New York, so the name is not a film tie-in. See the Skyfall page for the wider wardrobe.
The details of the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat
Melton wool. Melton is a dense, tightly finished cloth that holds its shape, and the maker describes it as warm and sturdy. Billy Reid’s current navy coat is a blend of 75% wool and 25% polyamide. Earlier versions were reported to differ, so check the label on any pre-owned coat.
Bound seams, no lining. Instead of a lining, the internal seams are bound. The maker says this reduces bulk, and it means the coat is cut close without extra layers inside.
Calfskin under-collar. The under-collar is calfskin, embossed with the maker’s ribbon stripe. Turn the collar up and the leather shows; leave it down and only you know it is there.
Horn buttons and handwarmer pockets. The buttons are genuine horn rather than plastic. The handwarmer pockets sit at chest height beside the welt pockets lower down, so there is somewhere for gloves and somewhere for hands.
A peak lapel. It is smaller than a traditional naval collar. Worn up it is less ostentatious, though it gives less protection from the wind than a larger collar would. Worn down it reads as tailoring rather than workwear.
Made in Italy. Billy Reid lists the coat as made in Italy, in a slim, structured cut.
Wearing it now
This is a city coat, and its cut suits a man who dresses with some care but not formally. Navy over a grey roll neck, flannel trousers and dark leather boots is the obvious combination, and the right one. It also works over a suit for an evening, provided the suit jacket is slim and the coat is sized to allow for it. We would keep it away from anything too casual; a hooded sweatshirt undoes the point of the cut.
Navy or black? Billy Reid sells both. We would choose navy. It is the colour from the film, and it pairs more easily with grey, brown and other blues than black does.
Fit. The cut is slim, and a medium measures 22.5in across the chest laid flat, 30.4in in body length and 25.75in in the sleeve. The maker’s model is 6ft 2in in a medium. An unlined wool sleeve grips what is under it, so try the coat with the thickest knit you plan to wear beneath, and consider the next size up if you are between two.
Warmth. With no insulating lining, this is a coat for autumn and mild winters, and for colder days with a good scarf. It is not a deep-winter coat, and we would not pretend otherwise.
Care. Dry clean only, according to the maker. Brush it after wearing and hang it on a broad shoulder.

Questions
Is this the coat Bond wears in Skyfall?
It is the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat, the model Bond wears in the Shanghai scenes in navy. Billy Reid still sells it, but the current coat is the maker’s present version, so details such as the fabric blend may differ from earlier ones.
How much does the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat cost?
The RRP at the time of writing, October 2026, is US$898 in navy or black. Prices change, so check the maker’s page before you buy.
Is the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat lined?
No. The seams are bound in place of a lining. That reduces bulk, but it also makes the coat less warm than a lined one, and the sleeves grip over thick knitwear.
Where is the Bond Peacoat made?
In Italy. Billy Reid states that the coat is made there from Melton wool, with horn buttons and a calfskin under-collar.
