Mr Hinx, in Spectre, wears grey: a coat in very fine wool, finished in Nappa leather at the collar, shoulders and cuffs, and fitted with an adjustable waist belt. Matchless, the London label, now sells it as the Hinx Coat. The Matchless Hinx coat is, in our view, outerwear for a man who wants some character in his winter wardrobe and is willing to stand out a little to get it.
In the film
Dave Bautista’s Mr Hinx wears the coat in the Austria sequence of Spectre (2015), first as he follows Daniel Craig’s Bond and later behind the wheel of the Range Rover. Matchless sells the same grey coat under the character’s name. See more from the film on our Spectre page.
The details of the Matchless Hinx coat
Waterproofed wool. Matchless describes the coat as very fine wool made waterproof by a special treatment. That suggests a coat meant for weather, rather than one kept for the walk from taxi to restaurant. A retailer listing gives the outer fabric as 65% wool and 35% polyester, with a viscose lining.
Nappa leather at the points of wear. The collar, shoulders, cuffs and pockets are finished in Matchless Nappa. These are the places a coat rubs against bags, seatbelts and hands, so the leather is practical as well as decorative. It also breaks up the grey and gives the coat a more defined outline.
Closures and adjustment. The coat fastens centrally behind a flap with buttons. Two logo buttons sit at the neck, and the two large front pockets have flaps and logo buttons of their own. The waist belt is adjustable and the cuffs have buttons, so the fit can be refined. A back slit helps with movement, which matters if you are driving or walking quickly.
Made in Italy. The coat is made entirely in Italy and lined in black, with the Matchless logo on the lining. Sizing is Italian: according to one stockist, M corresponds to 48, L to 50, XL to 52 and XXL to 54.
Wearing it now
This is a coat with a point of view, and the trick is to give it quiet company. We would wear it over dark knitwear and charcoal or navy trousers, with plain black boots, and nothing else with a pattern. The coat does the talking.
Belted or open? Belted, it has a defined waist and a strong line from shoulder to hem. Left loose, it reads as more casual and less theatrical. We would start with the belt fastened and loosen it once you have a feel for how the coat sits on you.
Where it works. It suits cold-weather travel, long drives and city winters. It is less at home over a formal suit, where the leather trim fights with the tailoring. Think weekends, airports and dinners that don’t call for a tie.
Care. The stockist’s care advice is to avoid washing, ironing, spinning or bleaching, and to have the coat professionally dry cleaned by a leather specialist. Keep this in mind before you buy. For more in the same vein, see our clothing collection.

Mr Hinx, played by Dave Bautista, wears it. It appears in the Austria scenes, when he follows Bond and later when he drives the Range Rover.

As far as the sources show, yes. Matchless sells the grey coat as the Hinx Coat, and its own magazine presents it as the coat Dave Bautista wears in Spectre.
Is the Hinx Coat waterproof?
Matchless says the very fine wool is made waterproof by a special treatment. We would still treat the leather trim with care and keep to the care instructions on the label.
How do you clean the Hinx Coat?
Have it professionally dry cleaned by a leather specialist. The stockist’s advice is not to wash, iron, spin or bleach it.
