Some of the best clothes in Spectre are the ones you barely notice. Beneath the suede jacket sits a plain mock turtle neck. The N.Peal Spectre sweater is a fine knit in cashmere and silk, with no pattern and no fuss. It does the work that a shirt and tie would do, in a softer and more modern way, and in our view it is the most useful thing Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in the film.
In the film
Bond wears the sweater in Lapis Blue in Spectre (2015), in the Austria sequence where he meets Swann for the first time at the Höffler Klinik. The Dark Charcoal Grey, the colour N.Peal still sells, is the sweater on the teaser poster. The sweater is also worn under the suede jacket in the final scenes, including the Thames speedboat chase. N.Peal no longer lists the Lapis Blue.
The details of the N.Peal Spectre sweater
Cashmere spun with silk. The yarn is 70% cashmere spun with 30% silk. It is the blend, rather than a pure cashmere, that sets this knit apart from N.Peal’s heavier sweaters.
Fine gauge. The knit is thin, and N.Peal lists it as a lighter weight. That matters under a jacket: it adds warmth without bulk at the shoulder or the cuff, and it keeps the line of a suede or tweed jacket clean.
A mock neck, not a roll neck. The collar is cut higher than a crew neck but does not fold over like a full roll neck. It looks tidy under a jacket and does not crowd the chin.
Mongolian cashmere. N.Peal says its 007 turtle necks are made from Mongolian cashmere. That is the maker’s own description, so check the label when you buy.
Wearing it now
This is a sweater for the man who has stopped wearing ties at weekends but has not stopped dressing. It works where a shirt and tie would feel stiff and a crew neck would feel casual: dinner, a gallery, the train to the country. We would wear it as Bond does, under an unstructured suede or tweed jacket, with dark flannel or moleskin trousers and plain leather boots.
Which colour? The Dark Charcoal Grey is the one to buy, since the Lapis Blue no longer appears to be available. Charcoal goes with almost everything, from navy to olive to tan, and it is the colour on the poster. If you find a Lapis Blue second-hand, check the label for the fibre content.
Layering. Wear it alone, or under a navy blazer. Skip the scarf; the neck is the point. Follow the care label when washing it, and treat a silk and cashmere blend gently.

Questions
Is this the sweater Bond wears in Spectre?
Yes, it is the same model. N.Peal confirms that the Lapis Blue in the Austria scenes is its Fine Gauge Mock Turtle Neck, and it describes the Dark Charcoal Grey as the sweater worn by Bond on the teaser poster.
Can you still buy the Lapis Blue?
It no longer appears to be available from N.Peal. The Dark Charcoal Grey remains on sale, as the 007 Fine Gauge Mock Turtle Neck.
What is the sweater made of?
It is 70% cashmere spun with 30% silk, in a fine gauge knit that N.Peal lists as a lighter weight.
What is the difference between a mock turtle neck and a roll neck?
A mock turtle neck has a shorter, closer collar that does not fold over. It sits tidily under a jacket and looks less heavy than a roll neck.
