Some of the best clothes in the Bond films are the ones you barely notice. In Matera, in No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a pale knitted shirt under a blue jacket, and it does its work without comment. It is the Anderson & Sheppard linen Henley, from the Savile Row tailor, and in our view the most useful piece in the film’s Italian wardrobe: a shirt that works in the heat, looks right at a dinner table and asks nothing of you.

In the film

Bond wears it in the Matera sequence of No Time To Die, under a blue jacket, while he is with Madeleine Swann. The shirt on screen was the long-sleeve style with the sleeves cut short by the costume department, so what you see in the film is a shortened version of this garment. Anderson & Sheppard also makes a short-sleeve Henley, which has been sold in off-white, if the film’s silhouette is what you want.

The details of the Anderson & Sheppard linen Henley

A knitted linen. This is a knit rather than a woven cloth, which gives it a soft drape and a lightweight hand. It is cut from linen for warm weather, and it lies on the body rather than standing off it. It also looks better for being a little creased.

Mother-of-pearl buttons. The Henley placket is fastened with mother-of-pearl, a small touch that lifts a shirt of this kind above a plain T-shirt. In daylight it catches just enough to look considered.

A relaxed fit. The maker describes the cut as relaxed, with long sleeves. That suits linen, which does not want to be tight. It also means the shirt can be worn loose over the waistband of trousers, or tucked in lightly, without looking either casual or fussy.

Where it comes from. Anderson & Sheppard is a bespoke tailor on Savile Row, and this Henley is sold through its Haberdashery shop. It is a tailor’s idea of a casual shirt, which is why it behaves so well under a jacket.

Wearing it now

This is a shirt for the months when a T-shirt feels too little and a collared shirt too much. Wear it under an unstructured jacket in navy or sage, with stone chinos or cotton trousers and suede loafers. In Matera it sits under a blue jacket; at home it works just as well on a summer evening, with the sleeves pushed up to the forearm and nothing on the wrist but a watch.

Colour. Anderson & Sheppard lists the long-sleeve Henley in cream and navy. The film shirt is off-white, so cream is the closer match, and it is the one we would choose: it is warmer against tanned skin than white, and it takes a navy jacket well.

Sleeves. You can wear the sleeves full length or push them up, which linen does willingly. We would rather not cut them. A long sleeve is more useful, and pushed up it comes close to the on-screen look.

Fit. The cut is relaxed, so take your usual size. Check the maker’s measurement table before you order, and read the care label before the first wash.

Questions

Is this the exact shirt Bond wears in No Time To Die?

Almost. It is the same long-sleeve style, but the costume department cut the sleeves short for the film. Anderson & Sheppard also makes a short-sleeve version.

Who makes the Henley Bond wears in Matera?

Anderson & Sheppard, the Savile Row tailor. The shirt is a knitted linen Henley with mother-of-pearl buttons.

Should I buy the long-sleeve or the short-sleeve?

Buy the long-sleeve if you want the more flexible shirt, since you can push the sleeves up. Buy the short-sleeve if you want the film’s silhouette without altering anything.

What colour is the long-sleeve Henley?

Anderson & Sheppard lists the long-sleeve Henley in cream and navy. The shirt in the film is off-white, so cream is the nearer match.
