The best-judged garment in the last wardrobe of Daniel Craig’s Bond is also the one you are least likely to notice. Under the blue sweater sits a plain white long-sleeve henley, and it is the Rag & Bone Classic Henley doing the quiet work: a soft collar, a short placket, nothing to look at and everything to wear. In our view it is the easiest piece of the film to take into an ordinary life.
In the film
Bond wears a white or off-white Rag & Bone Classic Henley in several scenes of No Time To Die (2021). Most visibly it is the base layer of his Commando outfit, under the blue N.Peal sweater, alongside dark combat trousers and Danner boots. In most scenes only the collar and placket show. Rag & Bone now sells this style as the Classic Slub Henley, formerly called the Flame.
The details of the Rag & Bone Classic Henley
Slub cotton. The fabric is 100% cotton, cut from long-staple cotton grown along the Peruvian coast. The slub gives it a faint heathered texture, so white reads as lived-in rather than stark. Rag & Bone describes it as soft and lightweight yet durable, which is what you want from a shirt that will spend most of its life under something else.
Distressed metal buttons. The placket closes with metal buttons whose edges look worn. The film shirt is described with a three-button placket and the same worn edge. It is a small piece of age that keeps a white shirt from looking new, and the detail is one we would look for in any alternative.
A long sleeve and a classic fit. Rag & Bone calls the cut classic fit. In a size medium the sleeve measures 35.25in (about 90cm) and the back length is 27.2in (about 69cm), so it is a shirt with some length in the body and the arm. It suits pushed-up sleeves as well as it suits being covered entirely.
Easy care. It is machine washable, cold, with like colours, no bleach and a low tumble dry. A shirt that survives ordinary laundry is more useful than one that needs coaxing.
Wearing it now
This is a base layer first and a shirt second. Wear it under a navy or mid-blue crewneck, as in the film, and let the collar and the first two buttons show. It works the same way under an overshirt, a field jacket or a soft unstructured blazer, where a white henley gives the neckline more interest than a T-shirt and less formality than a collared shirt.
On its own, with the sleeves pushed to the forearm, it sits with chinos, dark denim or cotton drill trousers and plain leather boots or trainers. We would keep everything else quiet: a plain leather strap watch, no logos, trousers in navy, olive or stone.
Which colour? White, because it is the closest to the shirt in the film and because it goes under everything. Rag & Bone also makes the Classic Slub Henley in other colours, but the point of this piece is how little it says.
