The best winter gloves are the ones you stop noticing. In Spectre, Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a pair of black quilted lambskin gloves against the Austrian cold. Agnelle now sells that glove as the James, and the Agnelle James gloves are, in our view, the right sort of glove for a man who wants warmth without ceremony.
In the film
Bond wears them in the Austria sequences of Spectre (2015): at Mr White’s lake cabin, and later while chasing Hinx and Madeleine Swann. Agnelle sells the glove today under the name James, product code JAMES/AGN/W.
The details of the Agnelle James gloves
Quilted lambskin. The outer is lambskin leather, quilted in a checked stitch across the back of the hand, with a plain palm. The quilting gives the glove a sporty, casual look and keeps the leather from reading as too formal.
Alpaca lining. The lining is alpaca, a soft and warm fibre, which is why the glove suits a cold walk to the station as well as a weekend in the country.
Tactile fingertips. Earlier pairs had no touchscreen provision, but the current James has digitally sensitive thumb and index fingers. It means you can answer a phone without taking a glove off.
The maker. Agnelle was founded in 1937 in Saint-Junien, in the Limousin, known in France as the City of the Leather Glove. It is still family-owned, now across three generations.
Wearing them now
These are a coat-and-knitwear glove rather than an evening one. Black quilted leather sits easily with a navy or charcoal overcoat, a shawl-collar cardigan or a field jacket, and it does no harm with a grey flannel suit on a bitter morning. For black tie we would reach for something thinner and unlined.
Which colour? Agnelle makes the James in other colours, but we would choose the black. It is the colour from the film and the one that goes with everything you already own.
Fit. Agnelle advises ordering a size larger than your usual size. Measure your hand before you order and read the maker’s size guide.
Care. If they get wet, let them dry naturally, away from radiators and fires. Heat is what stiffens lambskin. Store them flat or loosely stuffed so they hold their shape.
