Some of the best things Daniel Craig’s Bond wears are the ones you do not notice. In Shanghai he wears a plain white COS shirt with a black tie, and the COS white shirt from Skyfall is exactly as quiet as that sounds. It is a case for the unremarkable shirt, chosen well.

In the film

Bond wears a white COS shirt and black tie in the Shanghai scenes of Skyfall (2012), together with the Acne trousers. See the full list on our Skyfall page.

The details

What matters here is what is missing. The shirt is white, the tie is black, and nothing in between asks for attention. Enthusiast listings call it the COS Classic Slim Fit Shirt; we have not confirmed the exact model, and we found no current COS listing that matches it, so any example is likely to be second-hand. The button on this page is an eBay search.

Wearing it now

A white shirt and a dark tie ask nothing of a room. We would wear it under a navy or charcoal suit, with the collar buttoned and the tie knotted small. The point is the absence of detail: no contrast trim, no loud weave. Look for a plain cotton shirt in a slim but not tight cut, and judge it by how the collar sits against the tie.

In the same spirit

An alternative, not the COS shirt: Turnbull & Asser Casino Royale White Dress Shirt, a plain white dress shirt from a shirtmaker.
