Some of the best things Daniel Craig’s Bond wears are the ones nobody remarks on. In the London scenes of Spectre he pulls on a pair of plain black gloves, and they do exactly what gloves should: keep the hands warm and stay out of the way. They are the Mulberry Day Glove in black deerskin, and in our view one of the easiest pieces of the film’s wardrobe to carry into an ordinary winter.

In the film

Bond wears black leather gloves in London in Spectre (2015), as part of what our catalogue calls the Thames outfit. Press coverage around the film, including IBTimes UK, named them as Mulberry’s Day Glove in black deerskin.

The details of the Mulberry Day Glove

Deerskin. Deerskin is a soft, pliable leather with a fine, matt surface rather than a shine. In black it reads as dark and quiet, and it relaxes to the hand with wear. That is the argument for choosing it over a stiffer, glossier calf.

Black, and nothing else. There is no contrast colour, and press coverage mentions only subtle stitching. A glove like this works with a navy overcoat, a charcoal one or a dark car coat, and it never competes with what is around it.

The name. Mulberry called it the Day Glove, which suggests the brief: something to wear daily, not to save. We have not confirmed the lining or construction from the maker, so we leave them undescribed rather than guess.

Wearing it now

Black gloves belong with dark, quiet clothes. We would wear them with a navy or charcoal overcoat, a dark scarf and plain leather shoes, and take them off the moment you sit down to dinner. They also suit the commute better than a hat does: practical, and unremarkable in the right way.

Fit. Gloves should fit close without pulling across the knuckles. Measure around the palm just below the knuckles, as most makers’ charts ask, and try a pair on if you can. Leather gives a little, so choose the size that feels snug rather than loose.

Care. If they get wet, let them dry naturally and away from a radiator, shaping them gently by hand as they dry. Heat is what ruins deerskin.

Finding a pair. We could not find this exact glove on sale new from Mulberry, and we treat it as out of production. It is found second-hand; check the size carefully and ask for photographs of the fingertips and seams.

In the same spirit

These are alternatives, not the gloves Bond wears in London. Both are plain, dark and unornamented.

Dents Daniel Gloves 5-1007 (Skyfall): black, unlined hairsheep leather, the plainest of the pair.
Agnelle James Gloves in Noir Tactile (Spectre): quilted black lambskin lined in alpaca, a warmer choice for deep winter.

Questions

Are these the gloves Bond wears in Spectre?

Yes, according to our catalogue and press coverage at the time. Bond wears black deerskin gloves in London, identified as the Mulberry Day Glove.

Does Mulberry still sell the Day Glove in black deerskin?

Not as far as we can find. Mulberry’s men’s gloves page returned no results when we looked, and we treat the glove as out of production. Second-hand pairs are the route to the original.

How much did the Mulberry Day Glove cost?

Press coverage around the release of Spectre reported £225. We have not confirmed a current price.

How should deerskin gloves fit?

Snug across the palm and knuckles, with the fingers reaching the ends of yours without bunching. Leather relaxes a little with wear, so a slightly firm fit at first is right.
