Most film coats are chosen to be noticed from across a room. Moneypenny’s is chosen to be noticed up close. The Paul Smith black check mac coat is long, dark and quiet from the outside, and lined in pink and chocolate brown cupro on the inside. Naomie Harris wears it in No Time To Die, and it makes the case for a coat that is plain to look at and a pleasure to open.

In the film

Eve Moneypenny wears the coat in the London scenes of No Time To Die, in the sequences where she rides through the city with Daniel Craig’s Bond in his Aston Martin V8. She wears it over a pink silk blouse with oversized cuffs and navy trousers with pink stripes, an outfit that carries the lining’s colours out onto the street.

The details of the Paul Smith black check mac coat

These details come from a single published description of the coat, which we have not been able to check against Paul Smith.

Black, with a taupe and red check. The cloth is a textured weave, with a check and stripe pattern in taupe and red. At a distance it reads as black. Closer to, the pattern gives it depth.

A pink and brown cupro lining. The lining is cupro, in light pink and chocolate brown. It is the part nobody sees until the coat is open, and in our view it is the reason to choose this mac over a plain black one.

Cut for movement. The sleeves are raglan, which gives a soft shoulder. The coat is long, with two front pockets and a removable waist belt. Belted, it has shape. Open, it hangs long and easy.

The quiet fastenings. A concealed placket keeps the front clean, and there are button details on the sleeves. The horn buttons are described as sustainable. An internal Paul Smith patch carries the branding.

Made in Italy. The coat was shown in Paul Smith’s SS19 fashion show and made in Italy.

Wearing it now

This is a coat for a wet London morning that turns into a long day. It works over tailoring, and over knitwear with trousers and boots at the weekend. The belt gives you two silhouettes in one coat. We would wear it belted over a suit and open over everything else.

Colour. Pink is the film’s choice, and it works because it is kept to a blouse and a trouser stripe. We would follow that restraint: let the lining supply the colour and keep what is visible to navy, grey and black.

Finding one. The coat is out of production and no longer sold by Paul Smith, so it is found second-hand only; our button runs a search on eBay. Check the product code W1R-136C-A10313-79 and the lining against any listing before you buy. If you cannot find one, a long, belted black mac in a textured cloth with a contrast lining is a route to the same look rather than the same coat.

In the same spirit

These are current alternatives, in the spirit of the look. None is the piece from the film.

Massimo Alba Duster Coat RAIN2 Agades (No Time To Die): a lighter, long outer layer for wet weather, with none of the check or the lining.
