Not every object in the Bond films is made to be noticed. The keyboard on Q’s desk in No Time To Die is among the least conspicuous: a Dell, set in front of two wide displays while he works through the contents of a USB stick. The Dell KM714 wireless keyboard is, in our view, a good argument for the unremarkable: a tool that does its job and leaves the desk looking calm.

In the film

Ben Whishaw’s Q uses a Dell KM714 keyboard, together with a WM514 mouse, in No Time To Die (2021). He is at his home desk checking the data on the USB stick that Daniel Craig’s Bond and Moneypenny bring to him. Both pieces are glimpsed rather than featured. Two versions of the KM714 are in circulation, and one is regarded as the more screen-accurate, so check which you are buying (see below).

The details of the Dell KM714 wireless keyboard

A low, flat profile. Dell gives the keyboard’s height as 21.2mm, with a length of about 380mm and a width of about 122mm. It sits low on the desk and weighs 540g without batteries.

Scissor keys. The keys use a scissor mechanism, a short-travel construction common on laptop keyboards. Anyone who types on a laptop most of the day should find it familiar.

Wireless over 2.4GHz. The keyboard talks to a small USB receiver rather than pairing over Bluetooth. That means one port taken and no pairing menu to open. Dell’s Universal Receiver can hold up to six compatible Dell devices, so other compatible Dell peripherals can share the same receiver.

Batteries. It runs on two AAA batteries, and Dell quotes about 12 months of battery life. A status light flashes amber when the charge is low, and there is a power switch underneath.

Media and eject keys. There are multimedia controls and an optical-drive eject key. Dell’s software adds an on-screen Caps Lock indicator.

Using it now

This is a keyboard for a desk that is meant to look composed: one screen or two, a lamp, a notebook, little else. Its virtue is that it does not announce itself. We would pair it with the WM514 mouse, which comes with it in the box, so that the two share one receiver and one USB port.

Check the version. Two versions of the KM714 are in circulation, and one is regarded as the more screen-accurate to Q’s keyboard. We have not verified the differences ourselves, so compare the listing photographs with the film, and ask the seller if in doubt.

Check the listing. The button goes to Amazon’s page for the KM714. Stock and the exact version change, so read the listing photographs and the key layout before you order.

Check compatibility. Dell’s manual lists Windows 7, 8, 10 and RT. Retail listings also mention ChromeOS. Dell’s documentation does not mention macOS, so if you work on a Mac, check first.

If you buy second hand. Make sure the keyboard comes with its own receiver. Dell’s Universal Receiver Control Panel can pair a device with another receiver, but it is simpler to buy a matched set.

Questions

Is this the keyboard Q uses in No Time To Die?
