Not every object in the world of Daniel Craig’s Bond is made to be noticed. In Skyfall, after the explosion at MI6, M works from a temporary office underground, and on her new desk stands an Anglepoise Type 1228. An identical lamp, also with the pale Ice White shade, sits on Bill Tanner’s desk in the same room, and both are in view when Bond meets them to discuss his test results. The Anglepoise Type 1228 desk lamp is a quiet piece of British design, and in our view the right kind of film object to own: useful every day and never loud about it. See it in context on the Skyfall page.
Owning the Anglepoise Type 1228 now
Sir Kenneth Grange designed it in 2004, the third of his desk lamps for Anglepoise. It keeps all the functionality of the traditional lamp, the spring mechanism included, in a more contemporary form. What you notice is the shade: semi-translucent polycarbonate that glows rather than glares.
We would keep to Ice White, the colour on M’s desk. Other colours exist, but the pale shade is the quieter choice and suits a plain wooden desk. Anglepoise also sells a rewire kit for the Type 1228, taking an LED bulb of up to 10W, so a worn cable or switch is a repair rather than a reason to replace the lamp. More for the desk and the study is in home and interiors, and more film objects are under the films.
