When Bond goes home to Scotland in Skyfall, he does so in a waxed jacket. The Barbour Beacon Sports Jacket is the closest thing in the shops to that jacket: slim, olive, cut like a blazer rather than a farmer’s coat. It is, in our view, the sharpest waxed jacket Barbour makes, and the Barbour Beacon from Skyfall is a piece that rewards wearing in.
In the film
Daniel Craig’s Bond wears an olive Barbour in the closing Scottish section of Skyfall. The jacket on screen was the limited-edition Barbour Beacon Heritage X To Ki To Sports Jacket, a 2011 to 2012 collaboration with the Japanese designer Tokihito Yoshida. The costume department removed the hood and the large internal storm flap before filming, giving a cleaner neckline.
The Beacon Sports Jacket Barbour sells now is a later production model, not that original. It has no hood or storm flap, which is why it looks so close to the film version.
The details of the Barbour Beacon
Waxed cotton. The outer is 6oz Sylkoil waxed cotton, medium weight, with heavier 8oz waxed patches at the shoulders and elbows. It gives protection in changeable weather, though it is a wax jacket rather than a technical waterproof shell.
Tailored shape. The cut is slim and button-through, with a leather-lined point collar and leather-bound cuffs. It sits closer to the body than the Bedale or Beaufort, and looks more like a sports coat than a country jacket.
Pockets. There are two front flap pockets, a zipped lower pocket, a single zipped chest pocket and two zipped pockets at the back. A button-up throat cover closes the neck against the wind.
Tartan lining. The interior is lined in Barbour tartan, a quiet piece of the maker’s history that only the wearer sees. The pocket carries tonal script embroidery.
Wearing it now
Treat it as a blazer that happens to shed rain. Over a shirt and fine knitwear it is at its best, and a lightweight roll neck suits the shape better than a bulky fleece. Dark trousers, brown boots and a scarf in cold weather are all it needs. Turn the collar up for a hard wind, or fold it down with the lapels open for town.
Sizing. Barbour describes the fit as slim and advises buying the next size up from your usual. We would check the garment measurements first. The back length is 69cm to 81.5cm depending on size.
Care. Barbour says the jacket should not be washed, only sponge cleaned. As with any wax jacket, the finish will wear and soften with use, which is part of the pleasure.
Where to buy. Barbour sells it direct, and UK retailers stock it at times below the £399 RRP. See our Clothing pages for what else Bond wears, or read more about Daniel Craig’s Bond.
