Bollinger La Grande Année 1990 is believed to be the champagne Daniel Craig’s Bond orders from room service in Casino Royale (2006): a vintage bottle, in a film that is otherwise about nerve and money. It is the right instinct. Bollinger makes La Grande Année only in exceptional harvests, which gives the order a quiet authority. More on the film and Craig’s time in the role elsewhere on the site.
Owning Bollinger La Grande Année 1990 now
The 1990 is a past vintage, no longer in Bollinger’s current range, so you are unlikely to find it on a shop shelf; the button on this page searches Wine-Searcher for merchants and auctions listing the 1990. We have not confirmed the 1990 label on screen, and the vintage is the one named in the guides we trust. If you go looking, buy only from a merchant who can show where the bottle has been stored and for how long, and expect to pay for that assurance. Serve it cool rather than iced, in a white wine glass instead of a narrow flute. We think a wine of this age deserves room to open.
If the aim is the spirit of the scene rather than the year, the current release is the sensible route. It is made in the same way: oak barrels, natural cork, riddled and disgorged by hand. It is not the same bottle, only the same house and method. More in Food & Drink.
In the same spirit
For another Bollinger from the films that can be bought, see the Bollinger R.D. 2002 Extra Brut from Spectre. It is a different cuvée, offered as an alternative.
