The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Canada Goose Como Parka (Spectre)

The Canada Goose Como Parka is the winter coat Q wears in the Austrian scenes of Spectre, with a removable fur ruff, a two-way adjustable tunnel hood and storm flaps over the zip. It is out of production and found second-hand, and still a practical coat for a cold-weather trip.

Q is not a man who dresses for effect, which is why his coat in Spectre is so easy to like. The Canada Goose Como Parka is a winter parka with a hood that adjusts two ways, storm flaps on the zip and a fur ruff that comes off. In the Austrian scenes it is simply the right coat for the place, and it looks quietly right doing it.

In the film

The parka first appears hanging on the wall of Q’s underground workshop. Q, played by Ben Whishaw, then wears it in Austria, at the Höffler Klinik where he meets Daniel Craig’s Bond, and again in the cable car scene. It is the Como Parka from Canada Goose, worn with the rest of his Austrian outfit. Our full list of Spectre pieces places it alongside the rest of his wardrobe.

The details of the Canada Goose Como Parka

The Como Parka is a practical coat, and the details that matter are practical ones.

A removable fur ruff. The ruff surrounds the hood and can be taken off. It is the one decision the coat leaves to you: with the ruff it looks properly wintery, without it the coat is plainer and sits more easily in town.

A two-way adjustable tunnel hood. The hood has a vertical adjuster buckle. In practice that means you can draw it in against the wind and open it up again when the weather eases, without taking the coat off.

A two-way zip with storm flaps. Two-way means you can open the hem to sit down or climb stairs, or the neck when you warm up. The storm flaps sit over the zip to keep the weather out.

Two hand-warmer pockets. Simple, and exactly where your hands go on a cold platform. Nothing about the coat is decorative.

Wearing it now

This is a coat for people who live somewhere genuinely cold, and for travellers who would rather not shiver while they wait. It is built for getting somewhere in, not for sitting down in, so think of it as the layer you put on at the door and take off on arrival.

We would wear it over a roll neck and good knitwear rather than a shirt and tie, with dark denim or cord trousers and leather boots. The shape is practical, so it works best when everything underneath is quiet and plain. Keep the rest of the outfit simple and let the coat do the work.

Ruff on or off? We would take it off in town and leave it on for the mountains or a long walk in the wind. The coat works both ways, and that is much of its appeal.

Availability. We could not find the Como Parka in Canada Goose’s current range, and we treat it as out of production; it is found second-hand. Check the size label, the zip and the hood adjuster in the photographs, and be careful with listings that look too cheap for a coat of this kind. A parka with a removable fur ruff and a two-way adjustable hood is a reasonable route to the same look, though it will not be the coat from the film. Our clothing pages are a good place to look for other pieces.
