A Dell rugged tablet sits on a laptop stand in Q’s laboratory, and the closest match we can identify is a real product you can still find second-hand. The Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme tablet is made for industrial and outdoor work, and it is a sensible choice for anyone who carries a computer into places where a thin aluminium laptop would struggle.
In the film
In No Time To Die (2021), a Dell rugged tablet sits on an aluminium laptop stand in Q’s laboratory while he examines the mechanical SPECTRE eye. It looks like the 7212, but the exact model has not been confirmed. We therefore describe it as a Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme, not as a verified match for the machine on screen.
The details of the Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme tablet
Built for knocks. The housing is black reinforced polycarbonate, with a matte, rubberised finish on the bezel and sides and protective corner bumpers worked into the design. It is deliberately plain, a look that suits a man who prefers tools to gadgets.
An 11.6-inch full HD screen. The display is 1920 x 1080 and capacitive, with 10-point multi-touch. The front glass extends flush beyond the panel itself, which makes the edges easy to swipe, and the bezel angles up slightly to protect the screen without catching your fingers.
Ports behind doors. Power, micro serial, USB-C, USB-A, microSD and audio all sit on the right-hand side, each covered by a protective door that snaps shut. It is the opposite of the modern thin laptop, and all the better for it.
Power that lasts. Dell fits two hot-swappable batteries, so a flat one can be replaced without shutting the machine down. With the larger 34Wh pair, Rugged PC Review reports up to 19 hours of use. The tablet starts at about 2.8lb and is available with sixth-, seventh- and eighth-generation Intel Core processors and up to 16GB of memory.
A keyboard that stays on. An optional magnetic keyboard and kickstand turn the tablet into something close to a laptop. Rugged PC Review calls it one of the best-integrated keyboards available for any tablet, and considers it close to essential.
Using it now
This is not a showpiece, and we would not pretend otherwise. It is a working machine for a man who travels to farms, boats, building sites or remote houses and wants his computer to survive being left in a car or knocked off a table. Next to leather and wool it looks out of place, and we rather like that.
Which version? We would choose an eighth-generation processor and the larger 34Wh batteries, and add the keyboard and kickstand. We have not handled one ourselves, so we cannot say how it feels in the hand beyond what reviewers report.
New or renewed? At the time of writing, we found no current Dell retail listing, so our button runs an eBay search for the 7212. Used and refurbished examples appear there and through resellers, so check the battery condition and warranty before you buy.
