Before Casino Royale, there was a murder on the French Riviera. Forever and a Day, Anthony Horowitz’s second Bond novel, was published in 2018 and is written as a prequel to Ian Fleming’s first book, exploring the origins of the agent himself. A British agent is found dead in the water, and Bond is sent to learn who killed him.
In the books
This is a continuation novel and the fortieth official Bond book. Horowitz built it on a treatment Fleming wrote in the 1960s for a proposed American television series, called Russian Roulette. Bond moves through fast cars, casinos and yachts, and finds an organised crime network beneath the glamour. Bond here is young and brash, which the Bookreporter review notes will surprise some readers.
Reading it now
We would read it as a companion to Fleming’s first novel, and either before or after the other Horowitz books. It suits a trip to the south of France, or a holiday that only pretends to be one. Amazon lists hardback, paperback, audiobook and Kindle editions, so choose the format that suits how you read.
