The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Jaguar C-X75 Stunt Car (Spectre)

The Jaguar C-X75 began as a hybrid supercar concept that never reached production, then found a second life as Mr Hinx’s car in Spectre. The orange stunt version, scorched by a flamethrower in the Rome chase, is the one that matters.

Most villains’ cars are an afterthought. The one Mr Hinx drives in Spectre had already been written off once. The Jaguar C-X75 was shown as a concept in 2010, engineered into a working prototype, then cancelled in 2012. The Jaguar C-X75 Spectre car is what it became next: a stripped, rear-engined orange stunt machine that gave Daniel Craig’s Bond a proper opponent for his DB10.

In the film

In the Rome sequence of Spectre (2015), Mr Hinx, played by Dave Bautista, pursues Bond through the city at night after the SPECTRE meeting. Bond uses the flamethrower in the tail of the DB10 on the car behind, and the Jaguar goes up in flames. Williams built four cars for the chase, along with two standard versions, and one was modified to be fireproof for that moment.

The details of the Jaguar C-X75 Spectre car

A concept, rebuilt for work. Jaguar and Williams Advanced Engineering developed the original C-X75 as a plug-in hybrid with a carbon composite monocoque. The film cars were something simpler. Per Car and Driver, they used a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 borrowed from the Jaguar F-type and a sequential racing gearbox.

Few were made, and the number is disputed. RM Sotheby’s says Williams built four cars plus two standard versions. Other reports say seven. Callum, the design firm of the original designer, Ian Callum, says only four exist. We would treat any single figure with care.

The scorched car. The version in our catalogue is the orange stunt car, scorched at the front and along part of the body. The damage tells the story: this is the working car, not the showroom concept.

A second life. Callum has since converted stunt cars for the road. The more thorough of the two is finished in a green called Willow Green, with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, active aerodynamics and a leather cabin. It is a reminder of what the C-X75 might have been.

Owning it now

The C-X75 never entered production, so there is no new one to buy. The stunt cars passed into private hands, and one went to auction with RM Sotheby’s in Abu Dhabi. Our button runs an eBay search on the model name, where any listings for the car, parts or models of it will appear; expect nothing like a showroom price list. For most of us the car is something to know about rather than to own, and the better question is what it says about taste. In our view it is a villain’s car better looking than the hero’s, which is rare in these films.

If the shape appeals, start with the history. Jaguar’s own account of the programme is linked below, and our guide to the cars of the Bond films is the next place to look. For something that fits on a shelf, there is the Scalextric Jaguar C-X75 slot car.

Questions

Who drives the Jaguar C-X75 in Spectre?

Mr Hinx, played by Dave Bautista, drives it. He chases Bond through Rome in it after the SPECTRE meeting.

Was the Spectre C-X75 the production car?

No. Jaguar decided in 2012 not to put the C-X75 into production. The film cars were built specially for Spectre and differ from the hybrid prototype.

Can you buy a Jaguar C-X75?

Not new, because it never reached production. One of the Spectre cars went to auction with RM Sotheby’s in Abu Dhabi, and Callum has converted stunt cars for the road.

What happened to the Spectre C-X75 stunt cars?

They went into private collections. Callum has since converted at least two for the road, including a green example with a new gearbox and a bespoke cabin.
