Lock & Co. Vesper Trilby Casino Royale Edition

Lock & Co. made this narrow-brimmed black velour felt trilby as an exact replica of the hat Vesper Lynd wears on her journey to Montenegro in Casino Royale. It is a limited edition, sold in a black and gold 007 box, and it is cut as a women’s hat.

Most Bond hats belong to men. This one belongs to Vesper Lynd, and it is the better for it: a small black trilby worn at the start of her journey with Bond to Montenegro. Lock & Co., the St James’s hatter, now sells the Vesper trilby as an exact replica of the one made for Eva Green’s Vesper in Casino Royale, in a limited edition.

In the film

Vesper wears the trilby as she and Bond set out for the Hotel Splendide in Montenegro. It is on screen briefly in the finished film and appears more prominently in a deleted scene. Lock & Co. describes it as a replica of the design it originally created for Eva Green’s character, and sells it as part of its 007 collection. For the film itself, see our Casino Royale page.

The details of the Vesper trilby

Velour felt. The hat is 100% velour felt in black, with a self-coloured band. Lock & Co. recommends brushing it in short strokes to keep it clean.

A narrow brim. The brim measures 5.5cm, the crown stands 9.5cm tall and the band is 4cm wide. Together they give the trilby a neat profile that sits close to the head, more tailored than a fedora.

Made by hand in London. Lock & Co. says each hat is prepared by one of its hatters in the shop at 6 St James’s Street. The shop dates from 1676 and calls itself the oldest hat shop in the world.

The box. Each trilby comes with a black and gold 007 x Lock & Co. Hatters hat box. It is a tidy thing to store the hat in, and Lock & Co. recommends a box for felt hats, kept away from direct sunlight.

Wearing it now

Lock & Co. sells this as a women’s hat, and it suits a woman’s wardrobe well: a black wool coat, a dark knit, narrow trousers. Wear it level, or tilted slightly to the side or back, which is the maker’s own suggestion. It is smart enough for a city winter and plain enough for a long train journey, which is where Vesper wears it.

It also makes a considered gift for someone who likes the film more than the franchise. The hat stands on its own, and nothing about it needs explaining. For the actor in the film, see Daniel Craig’s Bond.

Sizing. It comes in S/M and M/L. Lock & Co. publishes a hat-sizing guide and a video sizing consultation, and for a hat at this price it is worth using one.

Care. Brush short strokes with a hard bristle brush, steam over a kettle to lift dust, and dry a wet hat with a clean cloth. Never leave a felt hat on a radiator, as the heat will shrink it.
