The Maglite is the most practical object in a Bond film. In The World Is Not Enough, Pierce Brosnan’s Bond searches Davidov’s security office for leads, then shines a black torch into the boot of a Lada and finds Arkov’s body. Our catalogue identifies the torch as the full-size Maglite with three D-cell batteries, which Maglite still sells.
Owning it now
The classic Maglite 3D is machined aluminium with a diamond-knurled grip, a push-button switch and a spot-to-flood focus. It is about 313mm long, weighs about 856g with batteries and, in the incandescent version, throws a 269-metre beam at 60 lumens. It runs for just over nine and a half hours on three D-cells.
It is not a light that disappears into a pocket, and that is the point. Keep one in the boot of the car, the hall cupboard or the boat, where weight does not matter and reliability does. Maglite also makes an LED 3D, the ML300L, which puts out 746 lumens and runs for up to 298 hours on its eco setting. We would choose the LED for use and the incandescent for the film.
Buy from Maglite direct, and look for the black finish if you want the version in the film.
