The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Massimo Alba Mauko Trousers in Washed Black Needlecord (No Time To Die)

Slim, flat-front trousers in fine washed-black cotton needlecord, made in Italy with an unfinished hem for tailoring to length. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears them in the Norway scenes of No Time To Die, and we think they are the easiest piece of his wardrobe to wear well today.

Most of what Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in No Time To Die is built for a single scene. These trousers are built for a life. The Massimo Alba Mauko trousers are cut slim and flat-fronted in a fine cotton needlecord, washed to a soft black and fastened with a dark horn button. In our view they are the most useful piece in his Norway outfit, and the easiest to wear well today.

In the film

Bond wears the Mauko in washed black (nero lavato) in the Norway sequence of No Time To Die (2021). It is the outfit in which he is chased through the woods and picked up by Nomi. The trousers are worn with a Massimo Alba duster coat, a white henley and Crockett & Jones boots. See the film page for the rest of the wardrobe.

The details of the Massimo Alba Mauko trousers

Fine needlecord. Massimo Alba sells the Mauko as baby corduroy: a fine cotton cord that sits closer to a soft, textured plain cloth than to the heavy cords of a country-house wardrobe. It works in town as readily as in the woods.

Washed black. Nero lavato is the maker’s name for black that has been softened rather than left jet. That is what keeps a black trouser from looking like office dress.

A flat front and a slim cut. There are no pleats and no excess volume. The trousers have welt pockets, belt loops, a concealed zip and a front fastening with a tab and a dark horn button. Horn is a quiet choice, dark enough to disappear against the cord.

The “infinite” hem. The legs are left unfinished on purpose, so the wearer decides the length. It means setting aside a little for a tailor, and in return you get a length that suits your own shoes.

Made in Italy. The cloth is 100% cotton and the trousers are made in Italy. Massimo Alba says he uses the smallest tags in the world, in the colour of the thread, which suits the restraint of the cut.

Wearing it now

These are the trousers to reach for when you want to look composed without looking dressed. Black needlecord takes a grey or navy knit, a plain white or ecru shirt, or a heavier jumper in oatmeal or olive. Add a field jacket or a waxed coat and it is a country outfit; swap in a soft sports jacket and a pair of clean leather shoes and it is a quiet dinner outfit. We would not wear them with a matching black jacket, which would flatten the texture.

Boots or shoes? Bond wears boots with them in Norway, and we think that is right: a plain suede or leather boot, with the trousers hemmed to a slight break so the cord falls cleanly over the top. A low-profile leather shoe works equally well in town.

Hem and fit. The cut is slim and the hem is unfinished, so budget for a tailor. Have them taken to the length you want, over the shoes you wear most, before you wear them. The maker’s own model wears a size 48.

Care. Massimo Alba recommends washing by hand in cold water, with no bleach and no tumble drying. Dry them flat and press with a cool iron, or have them dry cleaned.

The rest of the outfit. Browse the clothing collection for related pieces. The point, though, is to wear the trousers on their own terms, not as a costume.

Questions

Are these the trousers Bond wears in No Time To Die?

Yes. Bond wears the Massimo Alba Mauko in washed black during the Norway scenes, including the woodland chase and the pick-up by Nomi.

Are they the same as the grey trousers in Matera?

No. The grey trousers Bond wears in the Italian scenes are a different Massimo Alba model, the Winch. The Mauko is the black needlecord pair worn in Norway.

Do the Mauko trousers need hemming?

Yes. They are sold with an unfinished hem, designed to be cut to the wearer’s length. Have a tailor finish them over the shoes you intend to wear most.

How do you wash needlecord trousers?

Follow the maker: hand wash cold, no bleach, no tumble drying, dry flat and press with a cool iron. Dry cleaning is also listed.
