Not every piece of Bond’s wardrobe costs a month’s salary. The Mil-Tec touch gloves from No Time To Die are plain black nylon, made for working outdoors and among the least expensive things you can buy from the film. They are worn by Daniel Craig’s Bond through the film’s most practical outfit. They are, in our view, the best argument for buying one thing from the film without a second thought.
Gloves are an easy thing to get wrong. Most men own one good pair and one bad pair, and wear the bad pair more often. These are for the other drawer: cold mornings, long drives and days when you want your hands free and your phone to keep working.
In the film
Bond wears black Mil-Tec gloves in No Time To Die as part of his commando outfit, with the blue N.Peal sweater, a white Rag & Bone Henley and the Omega Seamaster. He has them on during the mission alongside fellow agent Nomi, and they also appear in the glider aeroplane scene. They are identified as the Mil-Tec Combat Touch model in black.
The details of the Mil-Tec touch gloves from No Time To Die
Touch-screen fingertips. The index finger and thumb carry fibre-tip inserts, so you can use a phone or tablet without taking the gloves off. Only those two fingers are fitted, which is all most of us use anyway.
Two fabrics, each doing a job. The back is 70% nylon and 30% elastane, which gives the glove its stretch and a close fit across the hand. The palm is 60% polyamide and 40% polyurethane, a grippy surface that suits wheels, rails and handles.
Reinforced and ventilated. The fingers are strengthened with extra fabric, while the palms and fingers are ventilated so the hand does not overheat. It is a working glove rather than a winter one, which is exactly why it looks right.
A short cuff. The cuff is brief and adjusts with hook and loop, so it closes snugly at the wrist and is easy to keep beneath a jacket sleeve. Nothing flaps, nothing shines.
Light and quick to dry. The gloves are made to be lightweight and fast drying. They take up almost no room in a coat pocket or a glovebox, which is where we would keep a spare pair.
Wearing it now
The case for these gloves is that they are honest. Black on black, nothing that says you have been shopping the film. They suit plain, practical clothes: navy or olive knitwear, a waxed or field jacket, wool trousers, sturdy boots. With a tailored overcoat we would reach for leather instead; this is a glove for a walk, a drive with the window down, or an airport queue in November.
Black or olive? Mil-Tec also sells the same glove in olive. We would choose the black, which is the colour in the film and the one that disappears against nearly everything.
How warm are they? Lightweight and ventilated, so we would treat them as a layer for cool days, not a substitute for lined winter gloves. In hard frost, keep a heavier pair in the car.
Sizing. They come in S to XXL. Military Kit lists finger length from 12cm in small to 14cm in XXL, and palm width from 10cm to 11.5cm. It advises sizing down if you fall between two sizes, which makes sense for a glove that depends on a close fit at the fingertips.
Care. Hand wash only. Let them dry away from direct heat.
